Fundamentals of Composting
Join Matt Jones, Extension Horticulture Agent and the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of Chatham County, for Fundamentals of Composting, a workshop on how to compost food and yard waste at home or in a community garden. Food scraps and yard trimmings together account for more than a quarter of household waste. Instead of trucking this waste to the landfill, consider using composting – the controlled decomposition of organic materials into a soil-like substance – to turn it into a valuable soil amendment.
Participants will learn about the science behind the decomposition process, understand the types of materials that are readily compostable, and how to fine-tune the composting process by finding optimal temperature, moisture, aeration, and pile dimensions. You will also learn how to troubleshoot common composting problems. Cooperative Extension will present research-based information from NC State Extension Specialist Rhonda Sherman and visit the on-site composting demonstration area.
The workshop occurs Thu, Nov 6, 9am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Free parking is available at the venue. The workshop cost is $12 per person.
