Orchid Gallery, located on Hanks Chapel Road between Pittsboro and Jordan Lake, is a specialty tropical plant nursery growing thousands of orchids in a cluster of greenhouses on a rural Chatham County property. Founded in 1993 by Rita Baldwin, the business has grown into one of the more serious orchid destinations in the Triangle, with some plants in the collection now decades old.
Visitors can walk through the greenhouses to see orchids in various stages of bloom and shop the retail selection of plants, supplies, and cut-flower arrangements. The staff brings roughly 50 years of combined experience, and that depth shows most directly in the class offerings: orchid growing for beginners and longtime collectors, floral design fundamentals, and the Japanese art of ikebana, taught by working practitioners. Garden clubs can also book group presentations and behind-the-scenes greenhouse tours.
Orchid Gallery offers event, business, and home rental arrangements throughout central North Carolina. The retail shop is open Wednesday through Saturday at 2698 Hanks Chapel Road — hours split midday on weekdays (9-12 and 2-5), so plan around the lunch closure.
