Just a few miles south of Siler City off Old US Route 421 on Mount Vernon Springs Road are two natural springs pouring clean mineral waters named Health and Beauty. The peaceful area was once a famous health spa, Mt. Vernon Springs, and it attracted ailing people from far and wide. Local legend has it that the new name for the springs was suggested by John Washington, a descendent of George, who built a home near them for his health around that time. Today, the springs are still beautiful and free flowing. Many people still visit the springs on a regular basis and fill up jugs of water to take home with them. Access to the springs is free and they flow constantly. The springs are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The springs are listed on the national register of historic places. The Mt. Vernon Springs is a spring house that has two pipes with free flowing water coming out of them all the time, also an old concrete bridge that led to a path to go to the hotel. There are picnic tables at the springs. Just down the road is the Mt. Vernon Springs Presbyterian Church for those who like to take pictures, see the old gothic revival style structure, and walk through the cemetary of the very old grave stones.
