Carolina Sailing Foundation

DESCRIPTION

The Carolina Sailing Foundation is a nonprofit sailing organization based at Crosswinds Boating Center on Jordan Lake in Chatham County, just north of US-64 near Apex. Run largely by volunteers, the Foundation owns its own fleet and exists to teach people of all ages to sail safely, race, and build skills on the water. Its programs welcome sailors aged nine and up.

The cornerstone is the Carolina Summer Sailing Camp, a series of week-long day sessions for children ages 9 to 16. Campers sail in a protected cove with steady breezes and sandy beaches, learning to rig and handle single-person Optimist (“Opti”) dinghies and two-person 420s, with beginner and intermediate classes taught by US Sailing–certified instructors. Coaches stay on the water in powerboats throughout.
Beyond summer, the Foundation runs Junior Sailing in the spring and fall for younger sailors, a High School Sailing team that competes against schools across the Southeast, and adult lessons for those with little or no experience. The high school team practices on Jordan Lake and at Lake Crabtree, and travels to regattas at venues such as Lake Norman, Charleston, and the Carolina and Georgia coasts.

Safety comes first: sailors must know how to swim, wear a Coast Guard–approved life jacket on the docks and boats, and always be supervised by a coach. The emphasis throughout is on small groups, confidence, and having fun. For visitors to Chatham County, the Carolina Sailing Foundation offers one of the most approachable ways to get out on Jordan Lake under sail, whether for a single summer camp week or a multi-season path into competitive racing.

HOURS

Mon-Sun: 9am-5pm.

PARKING & DIRECTIONS

Because Crosswinds is within a state recreation area, visitors enter through the park. Entrance fees are charged per vehicle on weekends in April, May, and September, and daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day; day use is free the rest of the year. Once inside, follow the signage toward the boat ramp and marina; CSF directs participants to continue past the boat rental, then turn right when the road splits, and turn up the hill into the parking lot near the boat ramp. Parking is in the marina/boat-ramp lot.

AMENITIES

As a working marina, Crosswinds offers amenities useful to sailing families: a public boat ramp, public restrooms, a convenience store, ethanol-free fuel, boat storage and slips, and pontoon, kayak, and fishing-boat rentals. CSF sails from a cove with a steady breeze and sandy beaches. For its programs, the Foundation supplies the fleet — single-person Optimist dinghies and two-person 420s, plus coach powerboats on the water during every session. US Sailing–certified instructors lead instruction.

ACCESSIBILITY

Within the Crosswinds access area, the adjacent Crosswinds Campground offers three ADA-accessible campsites, and Jordan Lake State Recreation Area provides accessible camping and swimming at certain access points. Regarding the Foundation itself, families with accessibility needs should contact them directly before registering.

FAMILIES

The Carolina Sailing Foundation is built around youth sailing. Its core programs serve sailors aged nine and up, with the summer camp designed for ages 9 to 16 and junior programs for younger sailors. Sessions run in small groups with US Sailing–certified instructors and coaches on the water at all times, and the Foundation emphasizes safety, confidence, and fun, welcoming beginners. The Foundation also offers sibling discounts. Beyond youth programs, adult lessons make this a place where parents can learn alongside their kids across seasons.

ALCOHOL

Carolina Sailing Foundation follows Jordan Lake State Recreation Area rules: possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited.
