Intro to Whitewater Kayaking

June 1 @ 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join Frog Hollow Outdoors for Intro to Whitewater Kayaking on Sat, May 31, 11am-3pm and Sun, Jun 1, 11am-5pm at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.

This two-day course will introduce participants to the world of whitewater kayaking! Students will begin in a controlled flatwater environment, where they will be introduced to their whitewater kayak, practice the wet-exit procedure, and learn basic whitewater kayaking maneuvers, as well as how to research paddling destinations and water levels. You will then have the opportunity to apply these skills in a real-life river setting, learning and refining skills such as river reading, eddy turns, peel-outs, ferrying, attaining, identifying hazards, surfing basics, and more.

Locations for each day will be dependent on water levels and conditions. At the end of the first class day, as a group, you will decide on your location for the river run. Because the locations will vary, this means for some sessions you may run short sections of river, while in other sessions you will “park & play” to work the most appropriate rapids for the scope of this class. This also means that their class locations could be as close as 20 minutes, or as far as 3.5 hours away. They can provide suggestions for camping or overnight accommodations for the farther away rivers.

Ages 12 and up are welcome. Pricing can be found on the website. The first day of the trip takes off from the Farrington Point Boat Ramp.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

  • All guests will be provided with a white water kayak, a personal flotation device (life vest), a paddle, a sprayskirt, and a helmet. The recommended packing list can be found here. Guests will need to provide their own lunches.
  • Advanced online registration is required. Trips may be cancelled if the minimum group size of 2 is not met. Please note that environmental factors may impact the planned curriculum for the day. Gratuity for guides/instructors is always appreciated.
  • Participants must have taken at least one of the following: Kayak BasicsFull Day Intro to Kayak, or another outfitter’s equivalent class.
  • Estimating the time spent on water for river trips can be a challenging task. Numerous variables can affect the duration of a trip. A few considerations for this are water level and flow, group experience, managing a capsized canoe or kayak, and other relevant factors. Guests may be asked to assist with the shuttle. Shorter distance trips can take 3–5 hours, longer distance trips can take 4–7 hours.
  • Participants during winter months must wear cold-weather paddling gear appropriate for the air and water temperatures. Frog Hollow may be able to provide cold-weather paddle clothing to those who request it.
