My Little Farmer Durham, located on NC Highway 751 just over the line in northern Chatham County, is a working family farm built around classes, camps, and open play for kids ages one through nine. Founder Lindsey Schwartz grew up on her family’s farm in Chapel Hill and started hosting toddlers there in 2017. The program has since grown to more than 250 rotating class themes — Farm Tots for the youngest visitors, Little Farmers and Big Little Farmers for the preschool crowd, plus gardening sessions, drop-off camps, and indoor Farmhouse Series classes (think Little Chefs, Bunny Ballet, Farm Music) for cold or rainy days.
The animals do most of the talking. Bunny snuggles are the perennial favorite, but kids also feed chickens, meet ducks, scratch the donkeys, and say hello to a barn cat named Mouse. The on-site Mini Rider Academy runs pony experiences and riding lessons for ages three to sixteen, grounded in safety and confidence rather than show-barn pressure. Parents particularly praise how welcoming the farm is for neurodivergent kids — instructors who slow down, validate big feelings, and let children build trust with the animals at their own pace.
It’s also a popular spot for birthday parties (unicorn open plays are a recurring crowd-pleaser), seasonal events, and homeschool groups. Most classes are grown-up-and-me format for the toddler set, so plan to be hands-on alongside your kid rather than dropping off and running errands. Booking is done online through their Sawyer page, and classes fill up quickly — reserve before you drive over. The farm is a short hop from downtown Pittsboro and an easy add-on to a day spent exploring the rest of Chatham County.
