Bynum General Store

DESCRIPTION

On the bank of the Haw River, five miles north of Pittsboro, the Bynum General Store has anchored its mill village for nearly a century. For years, it operated as the Harris and Farrell General Store under Frank and Louise Harris, doubling as the town post office. When the store and post office closed in 2006, the community formed a nonprofit, Bynum Front Porch, to keep the building in use as an event and community center. Today, it remains one of the few surviving original rural country stores in Chatham County.

The store is best known for its music programming. The Bynum Front Porch Music Series runs every Friday evening from May through September, with performances on the grassy lawn beside the store and a food truck on-site. When the weather turns, the focus shifts indoors: the “Mill Town Yarns” storytelling series, recognized by the NC Storytelling Guild as one of the state’s premier storytelling hubs, brings singer-songwriters and storytellers into the historic building through the cooler months.

In April 2025, the Historic District of Bynum was added to the National Register of Historic Places, with a district marker installed along Bynum Road beside the store. The store is also available for community rentals and weekly programming, such as yoga and morning coffee chats, which rounds out the calendar.

FEATURES

Historic venue home to the Bynum Front Porch music series and a variety of community events.

PARKING

Parking is free and easy. There’s open visitor parking in the field next door to the store, or down at the Bynum ballfield. Both the parking areas and the grounds are gravel and/or short-grass lots, so flat, comfortable footwear is a good idea, especially after rain.

AVAILABILITY

The Bynum General Store is available to rent for private gatherings and events. In the past, the space has hosted birthday parties, baby showers, wedding receptions, community picnics, Scout meetings, and more.

Rentals and availability are handled directly by Bynum Front Porch. Because the organization is entirely volunteer-run, the most reliable way to reach out is through the contact form on their website at bynumfrontporch.org or via their social media pages. Rental fees help offset the nonprofit’s operating costs and support its community programs, including educational grants for Chatham County students. The store and grounds host regular public programming, so renters will want to confirm open dates around it.

AMENITIES

The site offers both an indoor store space and outdoor grounds, giving it flexibility across seasons and event types. The grounds include an outdoor stage and a grassy lawn area beside the store where audiences gather for the summer music series, with room for lawn chairs and open space for kids. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs, and the venue keeps a supply on hand for events. The store itself no longer operates as a retail or food vendor, but food trucks are welcome.

ACCESSIBILITY

The grounds and parking areas are gravel and/or short grass, set on level riverside terrain near the store. Visitors using mobility devices should be aware of the unpaved surfaces. Accessible parking is reserved in front of the store.

FAMILIES

The Bynum General Store is welcoming to families and children. Programming is built around community gatherings, and a typical summer evening sees kids playing on the lawn and near the Haw River while families relax in lawn chairs. The regular calendar includes family-friendly programming such as the all-ages bluegrass jam circle, storytelling, and seasonal community events.

PETS

The Bynum Front Porch summer music series and other programming are not pet-friendly. Please leave your furry friends at home.

ALCOHOL

Events are alcohol-free. A food truck is typically on-site for meals, but alcohol is neither sold nor permitted at the music series.
