Holds Many Secrets. Hides Many Stories: The Robeson Creek Greenway Project

May 2 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

A large mixed-media collage artwork densely packed with hundreds of small bird silhouettes cut from textured and patterned papers in muted natural tones — browns, grays, blacks, soft blues, ochre yellows, deep reds, and creams. The birds are arranged in swirling, radiating formations that flow outward from a central white negative-space opening shaped like a single bird in flight. Around this empty silhouette, the surrounding birds appear to spiral and ripple in concentric waves, with rows of red-winged birds forming an arched canopy across the top of the composition and denser, darker clusters massing at the bottom edge. Each bird is rendered as a simple cut-paper shape with a small round eye, but the variety of paper textures gives the flock individual character. The piece sits on a torn-edge sheet of cream paper against a black background.Join the Chatham Arts Council for Holds Many Secrets. Hides Many Stories: The Robeson Creek Greenway Project on Sat, May 2, 1pm-2:30pm at the Robeson Creek Greenway in Pittsboro. What does it feel like to really notice the world around you? This new installation by Felix Obelix (aka Wendy Spitzer) weaves together community voices, field recordings, original music, and visual art into an immersive experience along the Robeson Creek Greenway in Pittsboro. Come walk, listen, and experience your community in a new way during the project’s premiere.

The project comprises a quasi-documentary audio piece, divided into two ~11-minute sections. You’ll walk together, listening to segment 1 in one direction, then turn around and listen to segment 2 as you walk back to the origin point. The entire audio piece runs ~22 minutes. Then, there will be a short presentation of the public artwork also made for this project (based on community-generated, greenway-related bird data!), followed by a Q&A with the artist.

This free community event takes place outdoors. Participants will meet at the S. Small Street entrance to the greenway. Please be mindful of neighbors’ lawns and driveways when parking. Bring your smartphone and headphones/earbuds! You will access the audio project on your phone and listen to it through your headphones while walking the greenway together. Make sure to bring a water bottle and shoes you can walk in! Robeson Creek Greenway is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers; it is paved and relatively flat.

Parking is available along S. Small Street, or you can use the public parking lot at Main Street Station. Please cross East Street (Business 64) if you choose to park there. The S. Small St. entrance to the greenway is in a neighborhood, so please be mindful not to block driveways. Find your way with what3words: https://w3w.co/animates.shackled.gleefully. Please note that there are no public restrooms on-site.
