SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Composting
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of Chatham County\, for Fundamentals of Composting\, a workshop on how to compost food and yard waste at home or in a community garden. Food scraps and yard trimmings together account for more than a quarter of household waste. Instead of trucking this waste to the landfill\, consider using composting – the controlled decomposition of organic materials into a soil-like substance – to turn it into a valuable soil amendment. \nParticipants will learn about the science behind the decomposition process\, understand the types of materials that are readily compostable\, and how to fine-tune the composting process by finding optimal temperature\, moisture\, aeration\, and pile dimensions. You will also learn how to troubleshoot common composting problems. Cooperative Extension will present research-based information from NC State Extension Specialist Rhonda Sherman and visit the on-site composting demonstration area. \nThe workshop occurs Thu\, Nov 6\, 9am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Free parking is available at the venue. The workshop cost is $12 per person. \nSee more events at CCACC.

SUMMARY:Special Screening: An Act of Love
DESCRIPTION:Join heart2heartnc as they kick off this year’s road to Death Faire with a Special Screening: An Act of Love on Mon\, Oct 27\, 5:30pm-8:30pm at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Produced by Transitions LifeCare\, “An Act of Love: Talking with Your Family About Serious Illness and End of Life” is a 25-minute documentary that explores the lived experiences of individuals from Black\, African American\, Hispanic\, Latino\, and rural communities as they navigate hospice and palliative care. Drawing on the personal stories of people living in the Triangle area\, the film sheds light on common misconceptions and the cultural silence that often surrounds end-of-life care in these underserved communities. \nNarrated by Grammy-nominated jazz artist Nnenna Freelon\, the film amplifies a chorus of voices—families\, caregivers\, spiritual leaders\, and healthcare professionals—offering a compassionate and multifaceted view of this critical time in life. These stories are especially timely in light of findings from the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO)\, which show that Black Americans on Medicare are 13% less likely to use hospice and palliative care than their white counterparts—a disparity that underscores the urgent need for culturally sensitive outreach and education. \nThis free event is co-sponsored by heart2heartnc\, WEBB Squared\, El Vinculo Hispano/Hispanic Liaison\, and The Fenwick Foundation. The evening will feature music by Diali Keba Cissokho and Will Ridenour\, light finger foods by Scurlock’s Catering of Pittsboro\, and will conclude with a discussion and Q&A following the screening.

After the lecture\, you will head outside to the Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center to see some cover crops and methods for planting and terminating. You will leave with some specific ideas about cover crops that can become your garden’s new best friend! \nCover crops are crops that are grown before or after the vegetable crop and not harvested as produce. Instead\, they are terminated by cutting or other methods and then left to decompose in the garden to help you build soil fertility\, improve soil structure\, reduce erosion\, suppress weeds\, and increase microbial activity and soil organic content. \nThis event is held indoors and is $12 per person. Free parking is available on the left side of the entrance to the Cooperative Extension office (red rocking chairs are located outside the entrance). Sorry – no pets allowed. SUMMARY:Cool Season Vegetable Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chatham County\, for a Cool Season Vegetable Gardening Workshop targeting home and community gardeners on how to grow cool-season vegetables. Participants will learn about planting techniques and timing\, best varieties\, common problems\, and harvesting methods for broccoli\, cabbage\, carrots\, kale\, lettuce\, onions\, peas\, potatoes\, and asparagus. Participants will also get a tour of the demonstration garden. \nVegetable crops are classified as either ‘warm-season’ or ‘cool-season’ according to their optimum planting time. Cool-season crops are generally planted in early fall to early spring because they do not tolerate the heat stress of the summer. However\, cool-season crops vary in the specific horticultural practices needed for optimum production. \nClasses occur Thu\, Aug 14\, 9:30am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Free parking is available at the venue. \nSee more events at CCACC.
