SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count Stroll
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Lower Haw River State Natural Area and Sean Higgins\, an Interpretation and Education Manager with NC State Parks\, for this Great Backyard Bird Count Stroll on Sat\, Feb 14\, 10am-11:30am. Learn some new bird identification skills or share some expertise with others. Anyone can participate in this nationwide citizen science project\, held every President’s Day weekend. You will observe bird study skins up close to practice observation skills. Then\, you’ll amble along the river and trails to conduct the bird count. Bring binoculars if you have them\, or they’ll have some you can borrow. Everyone is welcome\, from expert birders to absolute beginners. \nDIRECTIONS \nFrom US Hwy 15-501\, turn onto Durham-Eubanks Road. If coming from Chapel Hill\, this will be a left turn before the Haw River. If coming from Pittsboro\, this will be a right turn after crossing the Haw River. Follow Durham-Eubanks Road to the stop sign. Go straight at the stop sign and continue uphill on Bynum Church Road past the church and then downhill to the large State Parks parking lot on the right. \nThis event is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Join NC State Parks for Winter Plants Ornaments at Bynum Mill Access on Sun\, Nov 23\, 1pm-3pm. For thousands of years\, people worldwide have used plants to bring color and joy indoors. Plants that remain colorful in the cold winter months have become associated with winter holidays\, such as Yule\, the Winter Solstice\, and Christmas. This program showcases some of North Carolina’s vibrant winter plants and allows participants to take home an example by creating their own leaf printing craft. Drop by anytime between 1:00 and 3:00 pm to learn about plants that stay green in winter\, make a leaf print ornament to take home\, and enjoy roasting a marshmallow. \nSuitable for all ages\, this program is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Lower Haw River State Natural Area for a Fall Hike on the Lower Haw on Sat\, Oct 18\, 10am-11am at the Bynum Mills Access\, in celebration of Great Trails State Day. Families ages 7+ are welcome to explore using all five senses with a special sensory scavenger hunt. Participants will enjoy taking in all that the season brings\, even beyond the beautiful colors! Your guide will be Friends of Lower Haw board member and environmental educator Emily Behr. Arrive by 10am; the hike will begin at 10:15am. Bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. This family-friendly event is free and open to the public.
