He is expected to lead the condemnation of Hitler\, whom he underestimates. His oldest daughter and son\, leaders of Bohemianism and of the anti-Nazi movement\, share lovers. He flees Germany for Switzerland\, France\, and\, ultimately\, America\, living first in Princeton and then in Los Angeles. In this “exquisitely sensitive” (The Wall Street Journal) novel\, Tóibín has crafted “a complex but empathetic portrayal of a writer in a lifelong battle against his innermost desires\, his family\, and the tumultuous times they endure” (Time)\, and “you’ll find yourself savoring every page” (Vogue).

A day of immersion in traditional Chinese brushwork and the meditative exploration of its relationship to ink and paper\, Wang Ning welcomes both beginners and experienced practitioners. Step by step\, Master Wang will guide you in this ancient art: \n\nGrinding your own ink in the traditional way – a meditative preparation for picking up the brush and touching the paper.\nStudying one or more characters in depth.\nEnvisioning writing.\nWriting! Not painting.\nWeaving form and meaning as you write.\n\nThe cost is $80 per person and includes supplies of ink\, paper\, and a brush. You may bring your own supplies if you have them. Vegan chili will be served for lunch; please bring a sandwich or other lunch items of your choice. Each participant will receive a personal calligraphy as a gift (your Chinese name or another meaningful word). The workshop will be limited to the first 20 participants.
