In collaboration with Carolina Public Humanities\, Ferguson will discuss contemporary philosophical debates about the ethics of meat eating. While some modern philosophers have posited that even a pro-animal lifestyle can include animal products\, such as meat that will be thrown away\, Ferguson pushes against this idea. His talk focuses on what it really means to reject speciesism\, arguing that a more just world for all living beings requires changing how people think and feel about animals\, regardless of one’s actions. This talk gets to the core of the challenges and contradictions that face anyone who cares about animal welfare in the present moment. After an hour-long talk\, you’ll be able to meet the chickens and learn their stories before enjoying a delicious free lunch from Pure Soul! \nThis free event takes place outdoors. You’ll feel rested\, nurtured\, befriended\, and inspired. Camp days will include movement\, thanksgiving\, play\, a selection of different workshops\, leisurely lunches\, a check-in with a small group\, and circles to begin and end the day. Along with lots of permission to do what you are called to do\, including a lot of beautiful “nothing” if that is what you choose\, Clapping Hands Farm invites you to bring home a new commitment to yourself and the things that make you happy. \nLouise Omoto Kessel will be your guide for this week\, along with an excellent selection of guest artists. Louise is a storyteller and a printmaker\, and she loves to felt\, collage\, and make all manner of things. She is also the founder and director of Clapping Hands Farm and the mother of two young adults. \nTrans\, non-binary\, gender-fluid\, and gender-creative humans who want to participate in Women’s Week Camp are welcome! Ages 18+ are welcome. The cost is $325 per person. Scholarships are available\, and no one is turned away. Chatham County residents receive a $25 discount. You may sign up by the day. Crokinole is a classic Canadian tabletop game — think shuffleboard meets curling\, shrunk onto a round wooden board. It’s easy to learn in a single round and genuinely fun whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned shooter\, and newcomers are always welcome. \nHere’s how it works: Two players (or four\, in teams) sit across from each other and take turns flicking small wooden discs from the outer edge toward the center of the board. The bullseye is a recessed hole in the middle worth 20 points; concentric scoring rings count for less the farther out you land. Guarding the center is a ring of eight small pegs that your disc has to navigate around. \nIf your opponent has any discs on the board\, your shot has to hit one of them. Miss\, and your disc is removed. If the board is clear\, you have to land inside the innermost peg ring\, or your disc comes off. So every turn is a choice between attacking your opponent’s pieces and quietly racking up points of your own. This monthly book club will explore North Carolina’s rich history through engaging nonfiction. Whether you’re a lifelong history lover or are simply curious about the people and events that shaped our state\, join CCHA for conversation and lively discussion. \nRegister here for the June 2026 session\, where you will discuss Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers by David Wright and David Zoby. Fire on the Beach explores the dangers of 19th-century coastal transportation along North Carolina’s “Graveyard of the Atlantic\,” where ships carrying goods and people faced constant danger. Through the story of Richard Etheridge and the all-black crew of the US Life-Saving Service\, the crew faced discrimination and the dangers of the Atlantic\, yet rose to heroism in their service. Participation is free\, and you are welcome to bring friends. This month’s event takes place Sat\, Jun 20\, 9:30am-10:30am at the Chatham County Courthouse and Historical Museum. \nAll are welcome\, and admission is free. SUMMARY:Obstacles and Trail Clinic at Bar T Horsemanship
DESCRIPTION:Join Bar T Horsemanship for their annual Obstacles and Trail Clinic on Sat\, May 16\, 9am-4pm. This year\, they are combining these two clinics. A few of the challenges they will address include: \n\nBuddy sour/herd sour horses.\nRider confidence.\nCrossing water.\nGait transitions from walk/trot to canter/lope.\nJigging on the trail.\nStanding on a loose rein.\nFollowing too close.\nSpeed control.\nSoftness in the horse’s body.\n\nIn addition to the obstacle field\, they will include some obstacles on the trail. The fee is $275\, and the clinic is limited to eight participants.  \nClinics start promptly at 9am. The property opens at 8am\, so please arrive early to settle in and have your horse cared for. They usually start with a meet-and-greet on the barn deck\, then proceed to tack and ride\, depending on the clinic. All clinics include a hearty lunch with drinks and dessert. They have limited facilities to board your horse overnight if you are planning on attending a multiple-day clinic. They also have trailer hookups if you plan to spend the night. \nAll clinics are for every discipline\, every kind of horse\, and any skill level rider! Clinics will be held at the Bar T Horsemanship facility in northern Chatham County\, off Hwy 87 (730 Pete Thomas Road\, Pittsboro\, NC).
