SUMMARY:Intro to Whitewater Kayaking
DESCRIPTION:Join Frog Hollow Outdoors for Intro to Whitewater Kayaking on Sat\, May 31\, 11am-3pm and Sun\, Jun 1\, 11am-5pm at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. \nThis two-day course will introduce participants to the world of whitewater kayaking! Students will begin in a controlled flatwater environment\, where they will be introduced to their whitewater kayak\, practice the wet-exit procedure\, and learn basic whitewater kayaking maneuvers\, as well as how to research paddling destinations and water levels. You will then have the opportunity to apply these skills in a real-life river setting\, learning and refining skills such as river reading\, eddy turns\, peel-outs\, ferrying\, attaining\, identifying hazards\, surfing basics\, and more. \nLocations for each day will be dependent on water levels and conditions. At the end of the first class day\, as a group\, you will decide on your location for the river run. Because the locations will vary\, this means for some sessions you may run short sections of river\, while in other sessions you will “park & play” to work the most appropriate rapids for the scope of this class. This also means that their class locations could be as close as 20 minutes\, or as far as 3.5 hours away. They can provide suggestions for camping or overnight accommodations for the farther away rivers. \nAges 12 and up are welcome. Pricing can be found on the website. The first day of the trip takes off from the Farrington Point Boat Ramp. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \n\nAll guests will be provided with a white water kayak\, a personal flotation device (life vest)\, a paddle\, a sprayskirt\, and a helmet. The recommended packing list can be found here. Guests will need to provide their own lunches. \nAdvanced online registration is required. Trips may be cancelled if the minimum group size of 2 is not met. Please note that environmental factors may impact the planned curriculum for the day. Gratuity for guides/instructors is always appreciated. \nParticipants must have taken at least one of the following: Kayak Basics\, Full Day Intro to Kayak\, or another outfitter’s equivalent class.\nEstimating the time spent on water for river trips can be a challenging task. Numerous variables can affect the duration of a trip. A few considerations for this are water level and flow\, group experience\, managing a capsized canoe or kayak\, and other relevant factors. Guests may be asked to assist with the shuttle. Shorter distance trips can take 3–5 hours\, longer distance trips can take 4–7 hours.\nParticipants during winter months must wear cold-weather paddling gear appropriate for the air and water temperatures. Frog Hollow may be able to provide cold-weather paddle clothing to those who request it.

SUMMARY:Abraham Verghese\, The Covenant of Water
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Abraham Verghese\, The Covenant of Water on Wed\, Jun 4\, 7pm-8pm. McIntyre’s is delighted to welcome back Dr. Abraham Verghese for a special event to celebrate the paperback release of his New York Times blockbuster novel\, The Covenant of Water. Dr. Verghese will discuss with WUNC’s Anita Rao\, the award-winning journalist\, host\, creator\, and executive editor of “Embodied\,” a weekly radio show and podcast about sex\, relationships & health. \nTo attend\, one must purchase a copy of The Covenant of Water from McIntyre’s. If you are bringing a guest\, they will need to purchase a sidecar book of either The Covenant of Water or one of Dr. Verghese’s other books: Cutting for Stone\, The Tennis Partner\, or My Own Country. To purchase your copy of The Covenant of Water\, click here. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nThe Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel by Abraham Verghese\, the author of the major word-of-mouth bestseller Cutting for Stone\, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. \nSpanning the years 1900 to 1977\, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala\, on South India’s Malabar Coast\, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation\, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala\, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century\, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community\, grieving the death of her father\, is sent by boat to her wedding\, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning\, the young girl—and future matriarch\, known as Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life\, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss\, her faith and love the only constants. \nA shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself\, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding\, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAbraham Verghese is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the author of the NBCC Award finalist My Own Country and the New York Times Notable Book\, The Tennis Partner. His most recent book\, Cutting for Stone\, spent 107 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sold over two million copies worldwide. It was translated into over twenty languages and is being adapted for film by Anonymous Content. Verghese was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama\, has received six honorary degrees\, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He lives and practices medicine in Stanford\, California\, where he is the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine. A decade in the making\, The Covenant of Water is his first book since Cutting for Stone. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Jordan Lake Bald Eagle Paddles
DESCRIPTION:Join Frog Hollow Outdoors for Jordan Lake Bald Eagle Paddles along the northern reaches of Jordan Lake in search of its majestic residents. Jordan Lake State Recreation Area is considered one of the largest summertime nesting areas for Bald Eagles in the southeastern US. While they cannot guarantee a bald eagle sighting\, they can say that over the last handful of years\, they have spotted between 8 and 35 eagles on every trip that has run\, along with numerous other amazing raptors and lake residents. \nSCHEDULE \n\nSat\, Apr 26\, 8:30am-1:30pm. \nSun\, Jun 22\, 8:30am-1:30pm.\n\nAges 8 and up are welcome. Pricing can be found on the website. Trips take off from the Farrington Point Boat Ramp. \nKNOW BEFORE YOU GO \n\nAll guests will be provided with a kayak\, a personal flotation device (life vest)\, and a paddle. The recommended packing list can be found here. Guests will need to provide their own lunches. \nIntermediate skills are recommended; the trip distance can be up to 8 miles. They DO NOT recommend this trip to be someone’s first paddling experience. This trip is not appropriate for children under 13.\nAdvanced online registration is required. Trips may be cancelled if the minimum group size of 4 is not met. Please note that environmental factors may impact the planned curriculum for the day. Gratuity for guides/instructors is always appreciated. \nEstimating the time spent on water for river trips can be a challenging task.
