SUMMARY:Winter 2026 Homeschool Camp at Clapping Hands Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Clapping Hands Farm for their Winter 2026 Homeschool Camp\, hosted every Thursday\, January 8-February 12\, 9am-3:30pm. Clapping Hands is an arts and nature camp and retreat with a special love for community. Our homeschool camp workshops include visual arts\, crafts\, music\, theater\, and dance\, as well as engineering\, building\, nature exploration\, game creation\, and more! \nGENERAL SCHEDULE \n\nCamp opens with games\, Morning Circle\, and morning workshops in focus groups. Each session will have at least two Morning Workshop Focus Groups; campers choose one Focus Group to join for the entire 6-week session.\nLunch.\nAnything Goes and all-camp activities in the afternoon. Activities are different each day\, are based on campers’ requests\, and include opportunities to explore both focus groups. In other words\, if you are interested in both Focus Groups\, you can sign up for one of them for the morning and still be able to “taste” the others during Anything Goes.\nBuddy Group check-in and a Closing Circle before departure.\n\nFOCUS GROUPS \nThis session’s focus groups will include: \n\nEarth Romp is a playful exploration of all things outdoors. There will be exploring and discovering\, finding bugs and encountering animals and plants\, and running\, hiding\, climbing\, and playing. You might create new trails\, plant or find letterboxes\, go on a long hike\, and then play games upon arrival at your destination. You might craft using found and natural objects\, create Andy Goldsworthy-style outdoor art installations with leaves\, rocks\, and thorns\, and explore ancient technologies like atlatls. You might track animals\, study scat\, look for the earliest signs of spring\, and figure out what bugs are doing when it’s really cold.\nCarpentry is limited to a maximum of six campers and to campers ages 12 and older. Many structures around camp\, including the games shed\, lost-and-found shed\,  and many picnic tables and benches\, were built by campers themselves! In the Carpentry Focus Group\, campers will build benches and signs for current and future campers. Campers will learn practical\, creative skills such as recognizing quality wood\, implementing essential safety measures\, measuring and marking lumber for their structure designs\, attaching wood pieces with bolts and hex screws\, and addressing design considerations to build a structure sturdy enough to withstand weather and the energy of enthusiastic adults and kids!\nTable Games is for those who want to try a new game! You will learn many new games and play old favorites. Games will include strategy games\, drawing games\, writing games\, storytelling games\, dice games\, card games\, indoor party games\, games from a variety of cultures and countries\, puzzle games\, mazes\, math games\, geography games\, “getting to know you” games\, and a LARGE variety of board games (Louise has quite a collection!) The opportunity to craft traditional games to take home will be included.\n\nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Parents\, adults\, and older teens are also needed as Counselors or Volunteers. You might track animals\, study scat\, look for the earliest signs of spring\, and figure out what bugs are doing when it’s really cold.\nCarpentry is limited to a maximum of six campers and to campers ages 12 and older. Many structures around camp\, including the games shed\, lost-and-found shed\,  and many picnic tables and benches\, were built by campers themselves! In the Carpentry Focus Group\, campers will build benches and signs for current and future campers. Campers will learn practical\, creative skills such as recognizing quality wood\, implementing essential safety measures\, measuring and marking lumber for their structure designs\, attaching wood pieces with bolts and hex screws\, and addressing design considerations to build a structure sturdy enough to withstand weather and the energy of enthusiastic adults and kids!\nTable Games is for those who want to try a new game! You will learn many new games and play old favorites. Games will include strategy games\, drawing games\, writing games\, storytelling games\, dice games\, card games\, indoor party games\, games from a variety of cultures and countries\, puzzle games\, mazes\, math games\, geography games\, “getting to know you” games\, and a LARGE variety of board games (Louise has quite a collection!) The opportunity to craft traditional games to take home will be included.\n\nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Parents\, adults\, and older teens are also needed as Counselors or Volunteers. Parent volunteers at Homeschool camp do so much to make this program fantastic! \nCamp at Clapping Hands Farm takes place outdoors for the most part. They generally run camp in all weather conditions unless there are hazardous driving conditions or it is cold AND wet. In other words\, if it’s raining and 70 degrees\, they will have camp. If it’s 30 degrees and not raining\, we will have camp. But if it’s 40 degrees and raining\, they will skip camp and use their weather make-up day (either Tue\, Feb 19 or Tue\, Feb 26). Learn about the trail project improvements planned for this area that will provide a sustainably designed land trail with a pedestrian bridge over Miles Branch\, a sustainably designed paddle launch\, and a boardwalk leading to the launch. \nDIRECTIONS \nMeet in the large parking lot on US 15-501 at the Haw River between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. If headed south on US 15-501 from Chapel Hill\, the parking lot is on the right before crossing the Haw River. If headed north on US 15-501 from Pittsboro\, make a U-turn after crossing the Haw River\, then head south on US 15-501\, and the parking lot will be a short distance on the right. \nDress in layers for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking on uneven ground. All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are welcome but must be on leash at all times. There are no restroom facilities at this location. As we enter the coldest months of the year\, learn to identify evergreen trees – it’s not just the five pine species of White Pines\, but mountain plants such as rhododendrons and mountain laurel far outside their usual range. By the end of this hike\, you should know how to identify all of them and the point where the Deep and Rocky Rivers meet. This will be a 3-mile hike that will end close to sunset. Flashlights and headlamps are suggested as the hike will end near dusk. \nThis is a free event\, but registration is required. Plants that remain colorful in the cold winter months have become associated with winter holidays\, such as Yule\, the Winter Solstice\, and Christmas. This program showcases some of North Carolina’s vibrant winter plants and allows participants to take home an example by creating their own leaf printing craft. Drop by anytime between 1:00 and 3:00 pm to learn about plants that stay green in winter\, make a leaf print ornament to take home\, and enjoy roasting a marshmallow. \nSuitable for all ages\, this program is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:2025 Annual Fall Cleanup at Jordan Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join Clean Up Jordan Lake for their 2025 Annual Fall Cleanup on Sun\, Nov 2\, 1pm-4pm. This event is part of several larger events\, including The National Environmental Education Foundation’s National Public Lands Day and Keep Durham Beautiful’s Big Sweep 2025 Celebration! Here’s a map showing the area you’ll be covering. Assignments include: \n\nWalkers: You will be divided into groups at registration.\nBoaters: Boaters are needed to haul trash to the dumpster at the Army Corps of Engineers wharf near the dam. They will loan 2-way radios to boaters for communication.\n\nThis year\, they continue their tradition of offering a Trash Treasure Hunt. Items marked by “CJL TTH” are shown to the track captain\, who will issue a CJL business card redeemable for a merchandise prize at the registration table. Coffee and pastries will be available during registration. \nAll volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and work gloves (provided or bring your own). They strongly recommend long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and a hat. Shoreline Track Captains will be present to guide volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with bags\, trash grabbers\, first-aid kits\, water\, and gloves\, if needed. Pontoon boat and operator courtesy of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers \nAll participants must complete a liability waiver form online before the event. Waiver forms for Adults and Minors (age 11-18) must be submitted online by going to: \n\nAdults- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/volunteer-waiver.\nMinors- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/minor-waiver.\n\nDue to potential hazards\, they are unable to allow children under 11 to participate. Children over the age of 11 and under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nThe location is the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Game Land Access\, which can be reached by a short gravel road off the end of Seaforth Rd.\, near US 64 in Pittsboro. For GPS\, use 2999 Seaforth Rd\, Pittsboro\, which gets you to the turn onto the gravel road. Follow the signs to parking. Please note that this location is not the Seaforth Access to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. Parking is very limited\, so please carpool or get dropped off to save room along the narrow road. They will have volunteers helping to organize parking. \nIn the event of bad weather\, this event will be postponed to the following Sun\, Nov 9\, 1pm-4pm. Through a guided sequence of stillness\, movement\, solitude\, and community\, you will remember the ancestors and beloved dead who keep the Land. Part of The Road to Death Faire. \nINSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHY \nMcKenzie Bossert\, MA\, LCMHC\, NCC\, CEDS\, is a licensed clinical mental health counselor in private practice in Apex\, NC. An integral part of McKenzie’s approach to healing is the understanding that time spent in nature is a form of medicine. She is a certified forest therapy guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs and has earned a Certificate in Horticultural Therapy from the Horticultural Therapy Institute. In addition to weaving ecotherapy elements into her private practice\, McKenzie also offers forest therapy walks to the community to raise awareness of the physical\, emotional\, and spiritual benefits of being in relationship with the land.
