SUMMARY:2026 Annual Spring Cleanup at Jordan Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join Clean Up Jordan Lake for their 2026 Annual Spring Cleanup on Sat\, Mar 14\, 8:30am-12pm. Clean Jordan Lake is joining a group of local organizations hosting cleanup events as part of Creek Week activities\, including the Chatham County\, Orange County\, and Keep Durham Beautiful. Assignments include: \n\nWalkers: You will be divided into groups at registration.\nBoaters: Boaters are needed to ferry some volunteers to their cleanup track and back\, and also to help haul trash back to the dumpster at the Corps Bulkhead. Boaters who wish to ferry volunteers only are welcome. They will loan 2-way radios to boaters for communication.\nKayakers: Come to the registration table at 8:45am to receive assignments from CJL leaders.\n\nThis year\, they continue their tradition of offering a Trash Treasure Hunt. Items marked by “CJL TTH” are shown to the track captain\, who will issue a CJL business card redeemable for a merchandise prize at the registration table. Coffee and pastries will be available during registration. \nAll volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and work gloves (provided or bring your own). They strongly recommend long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and a hat. Shoreline Track Captains will be present to guide volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with bags\, trash grabbers\, first-aid kits\, water\, and gloves\, if needed. Pontoon boat and operator courtesy of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers \nAll participants must complete a liability waiver form online before the event. Waiver forms for Adults and Minors (age 11-18) must be submitted online by going to: \n\nAdults- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/volunteer-waiver.\nMinors- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/minor-waiver.\n\nDue to potential hazards\, they cannot allow children under 11 to participate. Children over the age of 11 and under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nDIRECTIONS \nGo to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area\, New Hope Access. Go straight past the ticket booth onto a dirt road. Follow the signs to parking. Space is limited on the narrow road\, so please carpool or arrange a drop-off if possible. Volunteers will be on-site to assist with parking.  Here’s where to go. \nThis event is free and takes place outdoors. This is not a safe activity for pets—please leave your furry friends at home. DESCRIPTION:The Annual Chatham YMCA Leprechaun Dash 5K/10K is a fun and challenging course. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Chatham County during this event on Sat\, Mar 14\, 8:30am-11:30am. Whether you’re tuning up for a spring half-marathon or the Tobacco Road Marathon\, participation is a great way to help the children of Chatham County. Prizes will be awarded for age groups and costumes – don’t forget to wear green! Following the race\, enjoy the day in Chatham County\, exploring our attractions\, restaurants\, and breweries. \nEVENT DETAILS \nBeginning at the ALL NEW Chatham YMCA (120 Parkland Drive\, Pittsboro)\, you’ll race through Chatham Park. Runners will follow greenways\, sidewalks\, and shoulders. The 5K and 10K will share the course with 5K runners\, turning around slightly earlier. Walkers are welcome. Pets are not allowed on the race course. Baby strollers/joggers are permitted\, but for the safety of all participants\, please start at the back behind the runners and walkers. \nRace day parking will be available at the Chatham YMCA. Event organizers request that participants carpool if possible. Overflow parking is available in Pittsboro’s public lots – please do not park in shopping center lots. DESCRIPTION:Carolina Tiger Rescue’s popular Twilight Tours run from March through October (Daylight Saving Time) on Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday evenings. Tours are for adults only (guests ages 18 years and older). Twilight tours are a more intimate experience to meet CTR’s animals. During these tours\, guests are the only visitors in the sanctuary. The day’s work is done\, and the guests have the sanctuary all to themselves. Enjoy a quiet evening with the cats\, and you might just be lucky enough to be serenaded by the lions!  After all\, they are still wild animals!  As with all their tours\, they cannot guarantee what the cats will do\, but it’s hard to have a bad evening with the animals. \nThe 2026 schedule will begin on Sun\, Mar 8\, and run through Sat\, Oct 31. The timeframe provided in this event listing is an estimate – please check your tickets for the exact time slot. Your Twilight Tour will last for about 1 ½ hours. Please arrive 15 minutes early. Trained volunteer tour guides will walk you through the animal sanctuary. You will learn about the various species living at Carolina Tiger Rescue and the challenges they face in the wild\, as well as the difficulties they encounter in captivity. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and take photos\, but please note that there will be no physical contact with the animals. \nAdvance tickets are required for attendees (no walk-ins available). Tours are offered from April to October on Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday evenings\, rain or shine. The cost is $32 per person\, and a maximum of 25 people may attend each tour. SUMMARY:Spring 2026 Homeschool Camp at Clapping Hands Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Clapping Hands Farm for their Spring 2026 Homeschool Camp\, hosted every Thursday\, Mar 5-Apr 16\, 9am-3:30pm. Clapping Hands is an arts and nature camp and retreat with a special love for community. Our homeschool camp workshops include visual arts\, crafts\, music\, theater\, and dance\, as well as engineering\, building\, nature exploration\, game creation\, and more! \nGENERAL SCHEDULE \n\nCamp opens with games\, Morning Circle\, and morning workshops in focus groups. Each session will have at least two Morning Workshop Focus Groups; campers choose one Focus Group to join for the entire 6-week session.\nLunch.\nAnything Goes and all-camp activities in the afternoon. Activities are different each day\, are based on campers’ requests\, and include opportunities to explore both focus groups. In other words\, if you are interested in both Focus Groups\, you can sign up for one of them for the morning and still be able to “taste” the others during Anything Goes.\nBuddy Group check-in and a Closing Circle before departure.\n\nSee this page for this program’s Focus Groups. \nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Parents\, adults\, and older teens are also needed as Counselors or Volunteers. Parent volunteers at Homeschool camp do so much to make this program fantastic! \nCamp at Clapping Hands Farm takes place outdoors for the most part. They generally run camp in all weather conditions unless there are hazardous driving conditions or it is cold AND wet. In other words\, if it’s raining and 70 degrees\, they will have camp. If it’s 30 degrees and not raining\, we will have camp. But if it’s 40 degrees and raining\, they will skip camp and use their weather make-up day (Thu\, Apr 23). Clapping Hands is an arts and nature camp and retreat with a special love for community. Our homeschool camp workshops include visual arts\, crafts\, music\, theater\, and dance\, as well as engineering\, building\, nature exploration\, game creation\, and more! \nGENERAL SCHEDULE \n\nCamp opens with games\, Morning Circle\, and morning workshops in focus groups. Each session will have at least two Morning Workshop Focus Groups; campers choose one Focus Group to join for the entire 6-week session.\nLunch.\nAnything Goes and all-camp activities in the afternoon. Activities are different each day\, are based on campers’ requests\, and include opportunities to explore both focus groups. In other words\, if you are interested in both Focus Groups\, you can sign up for one of them for the morning and still be able to “taste” the others during Anything Goes.\nBuddy Group check-in and a Closing Circle before departure.\n\nSee this page for this program’s Focus Groups. \nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Local pottery artist Courtney Pernell\, owner of Bayleaf market\, is a TLC supporter and is excited to merge her passions for trails\, nature\, and pottery to share that love with the wider community. Visitors to TLC’s seven public nature preserves can search for her handmade pottery “love birds” along the trails.  If you are lucky enough to find one\, it becomes TLC’s gift to you! They ask that once you find a pottery bird\, snap a picture of it on the trail and post it to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtags #hikeTLC and #pottercourt. Please limit your pottery gift to one per person. This fun event coincides with the Great Backyard Bird Count (Feb 13-16\, 2026)\, a global community science event that takes place each February and encourages people to observe and record bird sightings wherever they are. You might create new trails\, plant or find letterboxes\, go on a long hike\, and then play games upon arrival at your destination. You might craft using found and natural objects\, create Andy Goldsworthy-style outdoor art installations with leaves\, rocks\, and thorns\, and explore ancient technologies like atlatls. You might track animals\, study scat\, look for the earliest signs of spring\, and figure out what bugs are doing when it’s really cold.\nCarpentry is limited to a maximum of six campers and to campers ages 12 and older. Many structures around camp\, including the games shed\, lost-and-found shed\,  and many picnic tables and benches\, were built by campers themselves! In the Carpentry Focus Group\, campers will build benches and signs for current and future campers. Campers will learn practical\, creative skills such as recognizing quality wood\, implementing essential safety measures\, measuring and marking lumber for their structure designs\, attaching wood pieces with bolts and hex screws\, and addressing design considerations to build a structure sturdy enough to withstand weather and the energy of enthusiastic adults and kids!\nTable Games is for those who want to try a new game! You will learn many new games and play old favorites. Games will include strategy games\, drawing games\, writing games\, storytelling games\, dice games\, card games\, indoor party games\, games from a variety of cultures and countries\, puzzle games\, mazes\, math games\, geography games\, “getting to know you” games\, and a LARGE variety of board games (Louise has quite a collection!) SUMMARY:Winter 2026 Homeschool Camp at Clapping Hands Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join Clapping Hands Farm for their Winter 2026 Homeschool Camp\, hosted every Thursday\, January 8-February 12\, 9am-3:30pm. Clapping Hands is an arts and nature camp and retreat with a special love for community. Our homeschool camp workshops include visual arts\, crafts\, music\, theater\, and dance\, as well as engineering\, building\, nature exploration\, game creation\, and more! \nGENERAL SCHEDULE \n\nCamp opens with games\, Morning Circle\, and morning workshops in focus groups. Each session will have at least two Morning Workshop Focus Groups; campers choose one Focus Group to join for the entire 6-week session.\nLunch.\nAnything Goes and all-camp activities in the afternoon. Activities are different each day\, are based on campers’ requests\, and include opportunities to explore both focus groups. In other words\, if you are interested in both Focus Groups\, you can sign up for one of them for the morning and still be able to “taste” the others during Anything Goes.\nBuddy Group check-in and a Closing Circle before departure.\n\nFOCUS GROUPS \nThis session’s focus groups will include: \n\nEarth Romp is a playful exploration of all things outdoors. There will be exploring and discovering\, finding bugs and encountering animals and plants\, and running\, hiding\, climbing\, and playing. You might create new trails\, plant or find letterboxes\, go on a long hike\, and then play games upon arrival at your destination. You might craft using found and natural objects\, create Andy Goldsworthy-style outdoor art installations with leaves\, rocks\, and thorns\, and explore ancient technologies like atlatls. You might track animals\, study scat\, look for the earliest signs of spring\, and figure out what bugs are doing when it’s really cold.\nCarpentry is limited to a maximum of six campers and to campers ages 12 and older. Many structures around camp\, including the games shed\, lost-and-found shed\,  and many picnic tables and benches\, were built by campers themselves! In the Carpentry Focus Group\, campers will build benches and signs for current and future campers. Campers will learn practical\, creative skills such as recognizing quality wood\, implementing essential safety measures\, measuring and marking lumber for their structure designs\, attaching wood pieces with bolts and hex screws\, and addressing design considerations to build a structure sturdy enough to withstand weather and the energy of enthusiastic adults and kids!\nTable Games is for those who want to try a new game! You will learn many new games and play old favorites. Games will include strategy games\, drawing games\, writing games\, storytelling games\, dice games\, card games\, indoor party games\, games from a variety of cultures and countries\, puzzle games\, mazes\, math games\, geography games\, “getting to know you” games\, and a LARGE variety of board games (Louise has quite a collection!) The opportunity to craft traditional games to take home will be included.\n\nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Parents\, adults\, and older teens are also needed as Counselors or Volunteers. Parent volunteers at Homeschool camp do so much to make this program fantastic! \nCamp at Clapping Hands Farm takes place outdoors for the most part. They generally run camp in all weather conditions unless there are hazardous driving conditions or it is cold AND wet. In other words\, if it’s raining and 70 degrees\, they will have camp. If it’s 30 degrees and not raining\, we will have camp. But if it’s 40 degrees and raining\, they will skip camp and use their weather make-up day (either Tue\, Feb 19 or Tue\, Feb 26). Monday doubles as $5 pint night at bmc brewing\, so you can pair your hand of cards with one of the 18 beers bmc brews on site\, alongside hard cider\, hard seltzer\, wine\, and non-alcoholic options. \nThe event is free and takes place indoors. SUMMARY:First Day Hike on the Lower Haw
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Lower Haw River State Natural Area for a First Day Hike on the Lower Haw on Thu\, Jan 1\, 10am-11am. Get your body moving and the New Year’s Resolutions started! You will be hiking a section of the Lower Haw River State Natural Area located by the Haw River off US 15-501 upstream of the Bynum Dam\, known as the “Pegg Tract”. Learn about the trail project improvements planned for this area that will provide a sustainably designed land trail with a pedestrian bridge over Miles Branch\, a sustainably designed paddle launch\, and a boardwalk leading to the launch. \nDIRECTIONS \nMeet in the large parking lot on US 15-501 at the Haw River between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. If headed south on US 15-501 from Chapel Hill\, the parking lot is on the right before crossing the Haw River. If headed north on US 15-501 from Pittsboro\, make a U-turn after crossing the Haw River\, then head south on US 15-501\, and the parking lot will be a short distance on the right. \nDress in layers for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking on uneven ground. All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are welcome but must be on leash at all times. There are no restroom facilities at this location.
