SUMMARY:Tinkering School NC
DESCRIPTION:Tinkering School NC at Sun Star Farm is a small group of 12 campers led by 2 counselors and a 3rd counselor during peak building times. Once they cover skills and safety\, campers collaborate to create an awesome large-scale project based on a theme chosen late Monday/Tuesday morning\, depending on skill level\, interest\, and weather conditions. They use impact drivers\, cordless drills\, levels\, measuring tapes\, and other basic carpentry hand tools.  Each camper is given safety glasses and ear muff hearing protection. Every day\, they mix in group games\, visit farm animals\, explore the farm\, play water games\, and go down the water slide to keep cool. \nThey save 4 spots for girls during the registration period\, so they end up with a nice ratio of boys to girls.  If any of the “girl” spots are not taken by March 1st\, they open them to boys on the waitlist. DESCRIPTION:Forest Tinkering Camp at Sun Star Farm is a small group of 12 campers led by 2 counselors. Forest Tinkering Camp is very different from Tinkering School’s format.  Campers spend most of the day in the forest based in the camp’s new shelter\, learning and developing a variety of outdoor skills: flint-knapping to make arrowheads\, chopping wood for daily campfires used for cooking\, gathering native plants\, making fishing nets\, building a water filtration system\, whittling sticks into tools\, improving in archery\, and telling stories of yesteryear. As for projects\, they will be mostly individual.  Campers will need a certain level of maturity and be able to follow instructions to work and play safely in this environment. \nThey save 4 spots for girls during the registration period\, so they end up with a nice ratio of boys to girls.  If any of the “girl” spots are not taken by March 1st\, they open them to boys on the waitlist. SUMMARY:Forest Tinkering Camp
DESCRIPTION:Forest Tinkering Camp at Sun Star Farm is a small group of 12 campers led by 2 counselors. Forest Tinkering Camp is very different from Tinkering School’s format.  Campers spend most of the day in the forest based in the camp’s new shelter\, learning and developing a variety of outdoor skills: flint-knapping to make arrowheads\, chopping wood for daily campfires used for cooking\, gathering native plants\, making fishing nets\, building a water filtration system\, whittling sticks into tools\, improving in archery\, and telling stories of yesteryear. As for projects\, they will be mostly individual.  Campers will need a certain level of maturity and be able to follow instructions to work and play safely in this environment. \nThey save 4 spots for girls during the registration period\, so they end up with a nice ratio of boys to girls.  If any of the “girl” spots are not taken by March 1st\, they open them to boys on the waitlist. There is a 6:1 counselor-to-camper ratio. This camp is for children ages 9-12. \nCamp is $499/week. Early care starts at 8am and is $35/week. Based at the main farmyard\, Saplings have loads of animal time and exploration. The schedule also includes fun group games\, water games\, and creek stomping. Camp days follow an easy flow that starts with a morning circle and conversation\, and reading aloud of quality children’s literature. The bulk of the day is spent with campers choosing their own activities and using their imaginations. Campers can snack whenever they like\, but lunch is eaten together\, sometimes as a picnic under the Bald Cypress or giant Ash tree\, and then they read some more! Camp weeks are enhanced by a special visitor every Wednesday morning. A structured activity or form of entertainment is shared with the whole group. Seasonal free-play options throughout the day include: \n\nSports\, games\, and play structures.\nCrafts.\nCreek and sand play.\nVisiting with the goats and collecting eggs.\nFort building and tree climbing.\nSlip-n-sliding with a break for homemade popsicles.\nTrail walks and campfires.\n\nCamps occur on a 26-acre farm in Pittsboro\, NC\, run by Camp Director Melissa Frey and her adult daughter\, Marinne. Melissa provides structure\, safety\, and supplies to help campers accomplish their ideas for the day. Melissa is passionate about the benefits of significant free-play time for all ages\, away from electronics. DESCRIPTION:Forest Tinkering Camp at Sun Star Farm is a small group of 12 campers led by 2 counselors. Forest Tinkering Camp is very different from Tinkering School’s format.  Campers spend most of the day in the forest based in the camp’s new shelter\, learning and developing a variety of outdoor skills: flint-knapping to make arrowheads\, chopping wood for daily campfires used for cooking\, gathering native plants\, making fishing nets\, building a water filtration system\, whittling sticks into tools\, improving in archery\, and telling stories of yesteryear. Campers usually make unusual crafts using natural materials and techniques that follow the weekly themes. The farm camp is split into four age groups to offer age-appropriate activities\, stories\, creative projects\, and learning opportunities (see Sprouts Camp for kids ages 3-4). Each group has its own indoor and outdoor spaces\, allowing flexibility and ease in adapting to the day’s rhythm to suit the children’s needs. \nCamp Director Heidi Watkins\, a mother of three and educator\, is on the farm at all times and is intimately involved in every aspect of running the camp and engaging the children at Sun Star Farm. Before and aftercare are available. Early care starts at 8am and is $35/week. Aftercare runs from 3pm-5:30pm and is $125/week.  \nA monthly payment plan is available at checkout. Based at the cozy log cabin\, campers care for and learn about the animals\, go creek stomping\, and explore at the pond! Your child will also shoot bows and arrows\, cook over campfires\, and play fun group games. The cost for Oaks is $499/week. \nSaplings are kids ages 6-8. Based at the main farmyard\, Saplings have loads of animal time and exploration. The schedule also includes fun group games\, water games\, and creek stomping. The cost for Saplings is $485/week. \nSeedlings are kids ages 4-5. Based at the main farmyard\, Seedlings take care of animals in the shade\, get drenched during water play\, eagerly dig for treasures\, and have plenty of space to run wild as their imaginations soar. The schedule also includes creek adventures and picnics in the shady forest. SUMMARY:Cool Creek Farm Summer Camps
DESCRIPTION:Join Cool Creek Farm for Summer Camps\, hosted during select weeks in June\, July\, and August 2026. Camp days follow an easy flow that starts with a morning circle and conversation\, and reading aloud of quality children’s literature. The bulk of the day is spent with campers choosing their own activities and using their imaginations. Campers can snack whenever they like\, but lunch is eaten together\, sometimes as a picnic under the Bald Cypress or giant Ash tree\, and then they read some more! Camp weeks are enhanced by a special visitor every Wednesday morning. A structured activity or form of entertainment is shared with the whole group. Seasonal free-play options throughout the day include: \n\nSports\, games\, and play structures.\nCrafts.\nCreek and sand play.\nVisiting with the goats and collecting eggs.\nFort building and tree climbing.\nSlip-n-sliding with a break for homemade popsicles.\nTrail walks and campfires.\n\nCamps occur on a 26-acre farm in Pittsboro\, NC\, run by Camp Director Melissa Frey and her adult daughter\, Marinne. Melissa provides structure\, safety\, and supplies to help campers accomplish their ideas for the day. Melissa is passionate about the benefits of significant free-play time for all ages\, away from electronics. SUMMARY:Haw River Lowlands Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Lower Haw for the third event in their “Take a Walk on the Wild Side” hiking series with a Haw River Lowlands Hike on Mon\, Jun 22\, 6pm-7pm at Lower Haw River State Natural Area. Outdoor NC Guide & Haw River native Ben Clarke and his trusty dog Rocco will guide you along this lovely 2-mile round-trip loop evening hike along the east bank of the Haw between Highway 64 and the start of Jordan Lake. You’ll cross several creeks\, pass some of the river’s most famous rapids\, and marvel at unique sights like the cactus boulder and cedar rock! \nDIRECTIONS \n\nFrom Pittsboro: Take US 64 East toward Apex. Slow down on the bridge crossing the Haw River. Immediately after crossing the river\, there is a small gravel parking area on the right. Parking is limited. For your safety\, do not park along the highway.\nFrom Apex: Take US 64 west\, headed towards Pittsboro. After crossing over the Haw River\, make a U-turn at the first left and head east on US 64 back over the Haw River. Slow down on the bridge crossing the Haw River. Immediately after crossing the river\, there is a small gravel parking area on the right.\n\nParking is limited. For your safety\, do not park along the highway. Please wear sturdy shoes for walking on uneven ground and bring adequate water. Friendly dogs are welcome on leash!
