SUMMARY:Cover Crops: Your Garden’s New Best Friend!
DESCRIPTION:In Cover Crops: Your Garden’s New Best Friend! on Thu\, Oct 23\, 9:30am-11am\, participants will learn from the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chatham County about the many different legumes and grasses to use as cover crops\, what they can do for your soil and garden\, and how to include them in your garden planning. After the lecture\, you will head outside to the Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center to see some cover crops and methods for planting and terminating. You will leave with some specific ideas about cover crops that can become your garden’s new best friend! \nCover crops are crops that are grown before or after the vegetable crop and not harvested as produce. Instead\, they are terminated by cutting or other methods and then left to decompose in the garden to help you build soil fertility\, improve soil structure\, reduce erosion\, suppress weeds\, and increase microbial activity and soil organic content. \nThis event is held indoors and is $12 per person. Free parking is available on the left side of the entrance to the Cooperative Extension office (red rocking chairs are located outside the entrance). Sorry – no pets allowed. See more events at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center.

SUMMARY:Pumpkins on the Bridge - Halloween at Bynum Front Porch
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Pumpkins on the Bridge – Halloween at Bynum Front Porch on Fri\, Oct 31\, 3pm-11pm  at the historic Bynum Bridge. As the sky starts to turn that perfect Carolina gold\, the real magic begins. Neighbors carry their jack-o’-lanterns to the old Bynum Bridge\, closed to cars\, wide open to everyone. \nOne by one\, candles flicker to life\, and the bridge begins to glow with hundreds of orange faces—some grinning\, some spooky\, some just plain silly. The reflections shimmer on the Haw River below\, ripples of firelight dancing downstream while the night hums with laughter\, music\, and crickets. \nAnd don’t worry about supper… Dan’s Dogs will be right there\, serving up hot dogs\, while Tacos Paraiso fills the air with the smell of the very best burritos in the state of North Carolina. Grab a paper plate\, fill your belly\, and wander back to the bridge as the pumpkins take over the night. So come on out as the sun sets. Bring your pumpkin\, bring your people\, and watch the glow spread across the water. And if it warms your heart (it will)\, toss a few dollars to the Bridge Fairies of Bynum Front Porch\, the good souls who keep this tradition glowing year after year. \nSee more Bynum Front Porch events.

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Composting
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of Chatham County\, for Fundamentals of Composting\, a workshop on how to compost food and yard waste at home or in a community garden. Food scraps and yard trimmings together account for more than a quarter of household waste. Instead of trucking this waste to the landfill\, consider using composting – the controlled decomposition of organic materials into a soil-like substance – to turn it into a valuable soil amendment. \nParticipants will learn about the science behind the decomposition process\, understand the types of materials that are readily compostable\, and how to fine-tune the composting process by finding optimal temperature\, moisture\, aeration\, and pile dimensions. You will also learn how to troubleshoot common composting problems. Cooperative Extension will present research-based information from NC State Extension Specialist Rhonda Sherman and visit the on-site composting demonstration area. \nThe workshop occurs Thu\, Nov 6\, 9am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Free parking is available at the venue. The workshop cost is $12 per person. \nSee more events at CCACC.
