SUMMARY:Cool Season Vegetable Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chatham County\, for a Cool Season Vegetable Gardening Workshop targeting home and community gardeners on how to grow cool-season vegetables. Participants will learn about planting techniques and timing\, best varieties\, common problems\, and harvesting methods for broccoli\, cabbage\, carrots\, kale\, lettuce\, onions\, peas\, potatoes\, and asparagus. Participants will also get a tour of the demonstration garden. \nVegetable crops are classified as either ‘warm-season’ or ‘cool-season’ according to their optimum planting time. Cool-season crops are generally planted in early fall to early spring because they do not tolerate the heat stress of the summer. However\, cool-season crops vary in the specific horticultural practices needed for optimum production. \nClasses occur Thu\, Aug 14\, 9:30am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Prepare for a morning of botanical bliss at a vibrant gathering designed to foster community among plant lovers and enrich your indoor jungle. This isn’t just a swap; it’s an opportunity to share your passion\, exchange houseplant stories and care tips\, and discover exciting new additions to your leafy family. \nPLUS\, one lucky person will win a combo of specialty soils: Fox Farms Ocean Forest Potting Soil and Molly’s Succulent Mix. \nThe mixer format will be guided by FGS Plant Coach Debbi Barrett. Please label each plant or cutting with its name and lighting/water instructions. Note: Each plant will be inspected for pests before being shared. Be willing to share only something you would be willing to take! The raffle entry is free and in-person only; one entry per guest.
