SUMMARY:Cover Crops: Your Garden’s New Best Friend!
DESCRIPTION:In Cover Crops: Your Garden’s New Best Friend! on Thu\, Oct 23\, 9:30am-11am\, participants will learn from the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chatham County about the many different legumes and grasses to use as cover crops\, what they can do for your soil and garden\, and how to include them in your garden planning. After the lecture\, you will head outside to the Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center to see some cover crops and methods for planting and terminating. You will leave with some specific ideas about cover crops that can become your garden’s new best friend! \nCover crops are crops that are grown before or after the vegetable crop and not harvested as produce. Instead\, they are terminated by cutting or other methods and then left to decompose in the garden to help you build soil fertility\, improve soil structure\, reduce erosion\, suppress weeds\, and increase microbial activity and soil organic content. \nThis event is held indoors and is $12 per person. Free parking is available on the left side of the entrance to the Cooperative Extension office (red rocking chairs are located outside the entrance). Sorry – no pets allowed. See more events at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center.

SUMMARY:Cool Season Vegetable Gardening
DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chatham County\, for a Cool Season Vegetable Gardening Workshop targeting home and community gardeners on how to grow cool-season vegetables. Participants will learn about planting techniques and timing\, best varieties\, common problems\, and harvesting methods for broccoli\, cabbage\, carrots\, kale\, lettuce\, onions\, peas\, potatoes\, and asparagus. Participants will also get a tour of the demonstration garden. \nVegetable crops are classified as either ‘warm-season’ or ‘cool-season’ according to their optimum planting time. Cool-season crops are generally planted in early fall to early spring because they do not tolerate the heat stress of the summer. However\, cool-season crops vary in the specific horticultural practices needed for optimum production. \nClasses occur Thu\, Aug 14\, 9:30am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. Free parking is available at the venue. \nSee more events at CCACC.
