DESCRIPTION:Join Triangle Land Conservancy for a New Year’s Day Hike on Thu\, Jan 1\, 9am-11:30am at White Pines Nature Preserve. Join TLC Trail Guides Steve G. and Pam M. on this relaxed\, social hike to get outside and start the year right! White Pines Nature Preserve contains species not typically found in the North Carolina Piedmont\, but they remain here from the last ice age because the surrounding rivers create a microclimate. \nThere will be multiple stops along the way to learn about the preserve’s ecology and history. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and warm layers. and bring a full water bottle along. This is a free event\, but registration is required. If registration is closed\, please email Amaya Horner at ahorner@triangleland.org to be added to the waitlist. \nCURRENT MASK POLICY \nTLC seeks to build a supportive\, mask-friendly environment in all collaborations with staff and the public. DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of the Lower Haw River State Natural Area for a First Day Hike on the Lower Haw on Thu\, Jan 1\, 10am-11am. Get your body moving and the New Year’s Resolutions started! You will be hiking a section of the Lower Haw River State Natural Area located by the Haw River off US 15-501 upstream of the Bynum Dam\, known as the “Pegg Tract”. Learn about the trail project improvements planned for this area that will provide a sustainably designed land trail with a pedestrian bridge over Miles Branch\, a sustainably designed paddle launch\, and a boardwalk leading to the launch. \nDIRECTIONS \nMeet in the large parking lot on US 15-501 at the Haw River between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro. If headed south on US 15-501 from Chapel Hill\, the parking lot is on the right before crossing the Haw River. If headed north on US 15-501 from Pittsboro\, make a U-turn after crossing the Haw River\, then head south on US 15-501\, and the parking lot will be a short distance on the right. \nDress in layers for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for walking on uneven ground. All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Pets are welcome but must be on leash at all times. There are no restroom facilities at this location. DESCRIPTION:Join Clapping Hands Farm for their Winter 2026 Homeschool Camp\, hosted every Thursday\, January 8-February 12\, 9am-3:30pm. Clapping Hands is an arts and nature camp and retreat with a special love for community. Our homeschool camp workshops include visual arts\, crafts\, music\, theater\, and dance\, as well as engineering\, building\, nature exploration\, game creation\, and more! \nGENERAL SCHEDULE \n\nCamp opens with games\, Morning Circle\, and morning workshops in focus groups. Each session will have at least two Morning Workshop Focus Groups; campers choose one Focus Group to join for the entire 6-week session.\nLunch.\nAnything Goes and all-camp activities in the afternoon. Activities are different each day\, are based on campers’ requests\, and include opportunities to explore both focus groups. In other words\, if you are interested in both Focus Groups\, you can sign up for one of them for the morning and still be able to “taste” the others during Anything Goes.\nBuddy Group check-in and a Closing Circle before departure.\n\nFOCUS GROUPS \nThis session’s focus groups will include: \n\nEarth Romp is a playful exploration of all things outdoors. There will be exploring and discovering\, finding bugs and encountering animals and plants\, and running\, hiding\, climbing\, and playing. You might create new trails\, plant or find letterboxes\, go on a long hike\, and then play games upon arrival at your destination. You might craft using found and natural objects\, create Andy Goldsworthy-style outdoor art installations with leaves\, rocks\, and thorns\, and explore ancient technologies like atlatls. You might track animals\, study scat\, look for the earliest signs of spring\, and figure out what bugs are doing when it’s really cold.\nCarpentry is limited to a maximum of six campers and to campers ages 12 and older. Many structures around camp\, including the games shed\, lost-and-found shed\,  and many picnic tables and benches\, were built by campers themselves! In the Carpentry Focus Group\, campers will build benches and signs for current and future campers. Campers will learn practical\, creative skills such as recognizing quality wood\, implementing essential safety measures\, measuring and marking lumber for their structure designs\, attaching wood pieces with bolts and hex screws\, and addressing design considerations to build a structure sturdy enough to withstand weather and the energy of enthusiastic adults and kids!\nTable Games is for those who want to try a new game! You will learn many new games and play old favorites. Games will include strategy games\, drawing games\, writing games\, storytelling games\, dice games\, card games\, indoor party games\, games from a variety of cultures and countries\, puzzle games\, mazes\, math games\, geography games\, “getting to know you” games\, and a LARGE variety of board games (Louise has quite a collection!) The opportunity to craft traditional games to take home will be included.\n\nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Parents\, adults\, and older teens are also needed as Counselors or Volunteers. DESCRIPTION:Join Clapping Hands Farm for their Winter 2026 Homeschool Camp\, hosted every Thursday\, January 8-February 12\, 9am-3:30pm. Clapping Hands is an arts and nature camp and retreat with a special love for community. Our homeschool camp workshops include visual arts\, crafts\, music\, theater\, and dance\, as well as engineering\, building\, nature exploration\, game creation\, and more! \nGENERAL SCHEDULE \n\nCamp opens with games\, Morning Circle\, and morning workshops in focus groups. Each session will have at least two Morning Workshop Focus Groups; campers choose one Focus Group to join for the entire 6-week session.\nLunch.\nAnything Goes and all-camp activities in the afternoon. Activities are different each day\, are based on campers’ requests\, and include opportunities to explore both focus groups. In other words\, if you are interested in both Focus Groups\, you can sign up for one of them for the morning and still be able to “taste” the others during Anything Goes.\nBuddy Group check-in and a Closing Circle before departure.\n\nFOCUS GROUPS \nThis session’s focus groups will include: \n\nEarth Romp is a playful exploration of all things outdoors. There will be exploring and discovering\, finding bugs and encountering animals and plants\, and running\, hiding\, climbing\, and playing. You might create new trails\, plant or find letterboxes\, go on a long hike\, and then play games upon arrival at your destination. You might craft using found and natural objects\, create Andy Goldsworthy-style outdoor art installations with leaves\, rocks\, and thorns\, and explore ancient technologies like atlatls. You might track animals\, study scat\, look for the earliest signs of spring\, and figure out what bugs are doing when it’s really cold.\nCarpentry is limited to a maximum of six campers and to campers ages 12 and older. Many structures around camp\, including the games shed\, lost-and-found shed\,  and many picnic tables and benches\, were built by campers themselves! In the Carpentry Focus Group\, campers will build benches and signs for current and future campers. Campers will learn practical\, creative skills such as recognizing quality wood\, implementing essential safety measures\, measuring and marking lumber for their structure designs\, attaching wood pieces with bolts and hex screws\, and addressing design considerations to build a structure sturdy enough to withstand weather and the energy of enthusiastic adults and kids!\nTable Games is for those who want to try a new game! You will learn many new games and play old favorites. Games will include strategy games\, drawing games\, writing games\, storytelling games\, dice games\, card games\, indoor party games\, games from a variety of cultures and countries\, puzzle games\, mazes\, math games\, geography games\, “getting to know you” games\, and a LARGE variety of board games (Louise has quite a collection!) The opportunity to craft traditional games to take home will be included.\n\nDETAILS AND LOGISTICS \nCamp is $400 per child\, with full and partial scholarships available. Homeschool Camp serves children and teens ages 8-16. They accept older campers who are interested in their Focus Group topics. They also accept younger campers on a case-by-case basis. Parents\, adults\, and older teens are also needed as Counselors or Volunteers. Parent volunteers at Homeschool camp do so much to make this program fantastic! \nCamp at Clapping Hands Farm takes place outdoors for the most part. They generally run camp in all weather conditions unless there are hazardous driving conditions or it is cold AND wet. In other words\, if it’s raining and 70 degrees\, they will have camp. If it’s 30 degrees and not raining\, we will have camp. But if it’s 40 degrees and raining\, they will skip camp and use their weather make-up day (either Tue\, Feb 19 or Tue\, Feb 26). SUMMARY:Intermediate Beekeeper Course
DESCRIPTION:Join the Chatham County Beekeepers Association for an in-person\, one-day Intermediate Beekeeper Course on Sat\, Jan 31\, 8am-5:30pm at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center (CCACC).  The primary audience for the school is beekeepers with at least one year of beekeeping experience. This course is designed to help local beekeepers advance their knowledge and to increase the number of skilled beekeepers in the region. The course will be taught by a group of beekeepers who are not only subject matter experts but also have several years of practical knowledge and experience on the topics presented. At the conclusion of this one-day class\, participants will have received education regarding relevant beekeeping topics that will enable them to be better beekeepers and prepare them for advanced-level testing. \nThe cost is $75 for an individual attendee.
