SUMMARY:Ed Southern: The Devil’s Done Come Back
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Ed Southern: The Devil’s Done Come Back – New Ghost Tales from North Carolina\, in discussion with Ross White on Sat\, Oct 11\, 2pm-3pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nFifteen of North Carolina’s finest writers reimagine and reclaim the stories of the ghosts who have haunted all corners of the state. \nNorth Carolina ain’t what it once was: forests and fields have given way to suburbs and vacation homes\, textile mills to high tech\, tobacco farms to tourism. That doesn’t mean\, though\, that the ghosts of the Old North State have gone away. \nIn this anthology\, readers might glimpse some of the ghostly apparitions\, headless fiends\, and creepy hollers they heard about around their childhood campfires. Now\, fifteen of the state’s finest contemporary prose writers and poets have reimagined these stories—bringing us fresh tales that are bound to scare the living daylights out of us all over again. \nThe Devil’s Done Come Back reclaims these old ghost tales as living stories\, told and retold to frighten and delight. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nEditor Ed Southern is the author of “Fight Songs: A Story of Love and Sports in a Complicated South\, The Jamestown Adventure\, Voices of the American Revolution in the Carolinas\,” and the short-story collection “Parlous Angels.” His work has appeared in South Writ Large\, The Bitter Southerner\, the North Carolina Literary Review\, the Asheville Poetry Review\, StorySouth\, and elsewhere. Since 2008\, he has been the executive director of the North Carolina Writers’ Network. He lives in Winston-Salem\, NC. \nRoss White is the director of Bull City Press\, an independent publisher of poetry\, fiction\, and nonfiction. He is the author of “Charm Offensive”\, winner of the Sexton Prize for Poetry\, and three chapbooks: “How We Came Upon the Colony”\, “The Polite Society”\, and “Valley of Want”. His poems have appeared in American Poetry Review\, New England Review\, POETRY\, Ploughshares\, Poetry Daily\, and The Southern Review\, among others. He teaches creative writing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and co-hosts The Chapbook\, a podcast devoted to tiny\, delightful collections. \nContributors include: Michele Tracy Berger on the ghosts of the Great Dismal Swamp\, Wiley Cash (and his daughters) on the Maco Light\, Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle on the Raven Mockers\, Tyree Daye on family hauntings\, Jeremy B. Jones on the phantasms of Chimney Rock\, Ed Southern on the Jack Tales and the Devil’s Tramping Ground\, Ross White on the Little Red Man of Old Salem\, and many more. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days on Sat\, Aug 30\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nJoseph Bathanti’s novella\, “Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\,” follows Fritz Sweeney through a pivotal summer in 1973\, set against the backdrop of working-class Pittsburgh. Fritz grapples with an existential crisis triggered by his job at Acme Toy Warehouse\, which he finds absurd and meaningless. This sense of absurdity is deepened by his fascination with Albert Camus’s philosophy\, as seen in “The Myth of Sisyphus” and “The Stranger\,” which he was introduced to during his first college literature class by an enigmatic Vietnam veteran professor. Further complicating Fritz’s life is his relationship with Claire Raffo\, his mysterious girlfriend with whom he is precariously and hopelessly entangled. Throughout Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\, Fritz confronts numerous moral crossroads\, challenging his beliefs\, understanding of existence\, and his place in an ultimately unforgiving world. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJoseph Bathanti is the former North Carolina Poet Laureate (2012-14); recipient of the North Carolina Award in Literature\, the state’s highest civilian honor; and an inductee of the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. Author of over twenty books\, Bathanti is McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University in Boone\, North Carolina\, and is the recipient of the Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award. He served as the 2016 Charles George VA Medical Center Writer-in-Residence in Asheville\, NC\, and is the co-founder of the Medical Center’s Creative Writing Program. His co-edited volume\, The Anthology of Black Mountain College Poetry\, from the University of North Carolina Press\, was released in February 2025. His volume of poetry\, Steady Daylight\, from Louisiana State University Press\, is forthcoming in 2026.  \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Kate Hash\, Gracie Harris is Under Construction
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Kate Hash\, Gracie Harris is Under Construction\, in Conversation with Annie McQuaid on Sat\, Aug 16\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nIn this resplendent debut novel\, a beautiful love story unfolds for tenderhearted Gracie Harris—a mom of two and recent widow—as she navigates the unexpected curveballs that adulthood throws and takes her second chance to find love. \nGracie Harris never intended to become the queen of grief. But when an essay she writes the night of her husband Ben’s memorial goes viral\, she lands a popular column on love and loss and an impressive book deal. \nNow\, the biggest tragedy of her life is the center of her world. With a looming book deadline and her kids at summer camp\, Gracie escapes for a summer of solitude to the ramshackle mountain house she and Ben bought for their family before his death. When charming contractor Josh arrives on her doorstep to help renovate the home\, Gracie discovers an unexpected connection that is energizing… and surprisingly flirtatious. \nAs her feelings and resilience grow\, Gracie must decide whether she’s ready to embrace a new version of her life. Gracie’s first Happily Ever After didn’t last as long as she’d expected. Now she has to wonder: Could Josh be her chance for a second great love story? \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nKate Hash is a Chapel Hill\, NC-based debut novelist who enjoys creating and consuming stories about dynamic women\, unexpected relationships\, and the complexity that comes with entering midlife. She has lived in Italy\, run a business\, and even appeared on an episode of House Hunters International (one of her favorite “two truths and a lie” facts). During her four years abroad in the early 2010s\, Kate operated a popular travel blog and contributed guides to the much-beloved Design*Sponge. Kate is currently the Assistant Vice Chancellor for IT at the University of North Carolina and is mildly obsessed with college towns and the creative energy they produce. \nAnnie McQuaid resides in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, and serves as the marketing director for an education technology company.
