SUMMARY:Con Lehane\, The Red Scare Murders
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Con Lehane\, The Red Scare Murders in Conversation with Eryk Pruitt on Sat\, Jan 17\, 2pm-3pm. This wry\, big-hearted noir brings 1950s New York to life\, from the tenements of Hell’s Kitchen to the mansions of Riverdale\, from Sing Sing to City Hall\, with a gripping murder mystery laying bare the explosive conflicts between its big wheels\, its working stiffs\, its gangsters\, and its dreamers. \nBOOK SUMMARY \nJuly 1950: Mick Mulligan has just hung out his shingle as a private investigator in New York’s sweaty Hell’s Kitchen. A former Hollywood cartoonist who was blacklisted during a communist witch hunt\, Mick is broke\, divorced\, and in need of a paying gig to make his child support payments. But maybe not this gig. First off\, it’s impossible. Worse\, it’s liable to get him killed. \nLast year\, universally reviled cab company owner Irwin Johnson was murdered. One of his drivers\, an African American Communist Party member named Harold Williams\, was arrested\, tried\, and found guilty\, despite scant evidence. Now his execution date is two weeks away. New York City labor leader Duke Rogowski asks Mick to find fresh evidence that might buy Harold a stay of execution. \nLots of people might have wanted Irwin Johnson dead—anyone from his betrayed wife to his jilted mistresses’ jealous husbands to the mafiosi he was stealing business from. But no one has any reason to help Mick exonerate Harold Williams\, and some of Irwin’s former associates are happy to take a blunt object to the head of anyone asking awkward questions. Yet Mick can’t abandon a potentially innocent man to the electric chair. Can he pull off a miracle? \nABOUT THE AUTHORS \nCon Lehane is a mystery writer\, living in Washington\, DC. He is the author of The Red Scare Murders (Soho Press\, 2025)\, as well as the 42nd Street Library mysteries\, featuring Raymond Ambler\, curator of the library’s (fictional) crime fiction collection. He’s also the author of three mysteries featuring New York City bartender Brian McNulty\, and has published short stories in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. Over the years\, he has been a college professor\, union organizer\, and labor journalist\, and has tended bar at about two dozen bars. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in fiction writing from Columbia University School of the Arts and teaches writing at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda\, Maryland. \nEryk Pruitt is a screenwriter\, author\, and filmmaker living in Durham\, NC\, with his wife Lana and his cat Busey. In 2011\, he wrote and produced the short film FOODIE\, which won eight top awards at more than 16 film festivals. Since then\, he has written several others\, including KEEPSAKE\, LIYANA\, ON COMMAND\, and THE HOODOO OF SWEET MAMA ROSA. Pruitt’s short fiction has appeared in The Avalon Literary Review\, Thuglit\, Pulp Modern\, and Zymbol\, among others\, and in 2014 was a finalist for a Derringer Award. His novels DIRTBAGS and HASHTAG are available in print\, audio\, and electronic formats. His latest novel\, WHAT WE RECKON\, was released on October 10th\, 2017. “If there’s one thing I want to do\, it’s tell a good story. Horror\, noir\, suspense…Film\, stage\, page…To me\, all that matters is the story. I’ll tell you one at the bar over a bourbon or in a packed movie house during a film festival. Life is short; in the end\, all that remains are the stories.” \nThis free event takes place indoors at McIntyre’s Books. The space is ADA-compliant. Free parking is available on-site. No pets are allowed. Fearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. See more events at Fearrington Village.

SUMMARY:Welcome to Death Faire: Love\, Loss\, and Healing in a Small Southern Town
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Welcome to Death Faire: Love\, Loss\, and Healing in a Small Southern Town on Sat\, Jan 17\, 11am-12pm. Come celebrate life\, death\, and everything in between. With reverence and rebellion\, this soulful gathering of hearts will feature readings from a dozen of the 35 contributors\, who will share glimpses from the page\, weaving personal stories that speak to love\, grief\, and the spaces in between. Expect a swirl of live music\, a sermon-like reflection on grief\, grace\, and the human heart. It’s the kind of conversation that lingers long after the lights go out. Whether you carry grief\, care for the dying\, walk beside someone in sorrow\, or simply long to explore life’s impermanence with an open heart\, this evening and this book welcome you. Come curious. Leave changed. \nIn our small Southern town of Pittsboro\, North Carolina\, something extraordinary happens each year. Born from heartbreak and transformed by community\, Death Faire at The Plant has become a beloved annual event where community gathers to face what our culture so often avoids: death. Through a soul-stirring day of music\, art\, poetry\, ritual\, culture\, and shared wisdom\, Death Faire invites you to celebrate and honor the full cycle of life and death. It’s messy. It’s beautiful. It’s unapologetic. \nNow\, a decade later\, that spirit has been poured into a book: Welcome to Death Faire—a mosaic of personal stories\, images\, essays\, and poetry\, that creates space where death is no longer hidden in the shadows. Published by Tami Schwerin\, this beautiful book—like Death Faire itself—encourages you to challenge the stories we tell ourselves about death and to embrace it as an integral part of living a full life. \nThis free event takes place indoors at McIntyre’s Books. The space is ADA-compliant. Free parking is available on-site. No pets are allowed. Fearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Libby Buck\, Port Anna
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Libby Buck\, Port Anna on Sat\, Nov 22\, 11am-12pm. This enchanting debut novel\, exploring second chances and blossoming romance in a charming port town in Maine\, is perfect for fans of J. Courtney Sullivan’s The Cliffs and Catherine Newman’s Sandwich. \nBOOK SUMMARY \nJust about everything has gone wrong for Gwen Gilmore over the past year. She’s lost her mother\, her teaching job\, and been dumped by her—albeit not that great—long-term boyfriend. Adrift and out of options\, she packs her life into her barely functioning car and makes the lonely drive north\, to the only place she can think of going: her family’s aging cottage on the Maine coast\, Periwinkle\, which she’s recently inherited. \nThe cottage and Port Anna\, the foggy Maine town of Gwen’s childhood\, are unchanged in many ways. For Gwen\, they are full of the ghosts of her past—boyfriends\, forgotten creative dreams\, and painful memories of a sister lost too young. Periwinkle is also home to some more literal ghosts: The Misses\, friendly spirits who have long watched over the cottage\, but who now seem strangely unsettled\, slamming doors and moving furniture in the night. And behind its charming façade\, Port Anna has not escaped the realities of modern life. Family homes are being razed to make space for garish condos\, the cottage\, coveted by a relentless local realtor\, is about to be condemned\, and the unsolved disappearance of a teenage girl has set the town on edge. On the face of it\, it’s an odd place to try to make a new start. \nBut there are glimmers of hope everywhere\, if only Gwen can open herself up to possibility. Sparks fly with Leandro\, an Argentinian artist\, as aloof and witty as he is wildly attractive. Old friends and former flames come out of the woodwork\, bringing with them new opportunities and chances to laugh again. Even in the face of potential happiness\, though\, it seems some secrets refuse to stay buried. As the summer crowds return to the city and the locals hunker down for another harsh Maine winter\, Gwen will be forced to make choices that will change her life forever. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nLibby Buck earned a PhD in art history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She and her husband share three daughters\, an English cocker spaniel\, and an abiding love for the great state of Maine. Port Anna is Libby’s first novel. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. See more events at Fearrington Village.

SUMMARY:Justin Laborde: Scattered Far and Wide
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Justin Laborde: Scattered Far and Wide – The Naval Academy Class of ’38 at War on Sat\, Oct 25\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nScattered Far and Wide follows the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1938 as they rise from junior officers to combat leaders in World War II’s most pivotal battles. Through firsthand accounts and deep research\, Justin Laborde brings their stories of courage\, sacrifice\, and survival vividly to life. \nScattered Far and Wide tells the war stories of U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen from the Class of 1938. Commissioned on the eve of World War II\, they bore the new burden of command while at the forefront of the Pacific War’s most significant and most pivotal campaigns. They felt the wind and spray in their faces\, and the percussion of ships’ guns and depth charges at the pivotal moment in their lives and careers\, making their experiences unusually compelling\, heartbreaking\, and—most assuredly—instructive. \nFrom Pearl Harbor through the end of the war\, these men fought and struggled for survival as part of the U.S. Navy’s Asiatic Fleet. In the early months of the conflict\, they tried to stem the onslaught of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Some were captured and sent to brutal prisoner-of-war camps. Others took to the air from aircraft carriers as members of torpedo\, bomber\, and fighter squadrons during the Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway. Later in the war\, a number served aboard submarines\, experiencing some of the most legendary patrols in the history of the Silent Service. The young men who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1938 earned medals and fame\, left legacies of heroism and loss\, and sparked tales of renown and bravery that reverberate today. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJustin Laborde\, PhD\, is a strategic consultant and frequent speaker on consumer trends\, marketplace insights\, and business growth strategies for Fortune 500 companies. Raised in New Orleans\, Louisiana\, Justin now lives with his wife\, Amanda\, and their three children in Cary\, North Carolina. Justin’s grandfather\, Alden Laborde\, was a member of the Class of 1938. Upon his death\, Justin obtained a 1938 edition of The Lucky Bag\, the Naval Academy’s yearbook. Reading the memoirs of Alden’s classmates\, Justin realized he was well-placed to tell the fascinating and previously unreported story of this class’s experiences in World War II. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Sara Johnson: Bone Chilling on Sat\, Oct 18\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nAlexa Glock is teetering on a precipice\, the ground threatening to open up beneath her―and it’s not just the immediate peril of retrieving a long-lost hiker’s skull\, given up by a melting and dangerous glacier. She’s spending a ski weekend with boyfriend DI Bruce Horne and his two daughters\, and she couldn’t be more terrified. An entire weekend trying to win over a sullen teenager and a preteen with obvious loyalties to Mom? She’s more comfortable\, almost sliding to her death on an unstable glacier. When she indeed finds herself dangling in a crevasse waiting for the experts to rescue her\, she discovers a pelvis (wearing a red Speedo!) frozen in the ice\, and the heartbreaking task of identifying multiple remains and bringing closure to families begins. \nOnce safely back on terra firma\, awaiting the arrival of Bruce and his dreaded daughters\, Alexa follows the smell of smoke to a nearby pizza joint which has been completely destroyed by fire. When a body is discovered in the smoldering ruins\, Alexa splits her time between fire and ice\, working to identify a family’s long-lost loved one and the charred remains of the fire victim. Then an avalanche during a snowboard competition leaves Bruce’s oldest daughter missing along with the snowboarder she’s been hanging out with. As Bruce and other rescuers race to find the missing teens\, evidence begins to suggest that neither the fire nor the avalanche were accidents\, and that the daughter’s boyfriend might have information about both… \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nSara E. Johnson is a mystery writer who spent nine months exploring wondrous New Zealand. Everywhere she looked\, there was a mystery that needed to be written. Sara lives in Durham\, North Carolina\, with her husband and is a graduate of the Durham Citizen Police Academy. She is the past President of Triangle Sisters in Crime and a member of the North Carolina Writers’ Network. Bone Chilling is the 6th volume in her Alexa Glock series. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days on Sat\, Aug 30\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nJoseph Bathanti’s novella\, “Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\,” follows Fritz Sweeney through a pivotal summer in 1973\, set against the backdrop of working-class Pittsburgh. Fritz grapples with an existential crisis triggered by his job at Acme Toy Warehouse\, which he finds absurd and meaningless. This sense of absurdity is deepened by his fascination with Albert Camus’s philosophy\, as seen in “The Myth of Sisyphus” and “The Stranger\,” which he was introduced to during his first college literature class by an enigmatic Vietnam veteran professor. Further complicating Fritz’s life is his relationship with Claire Raffo\, his mysterious girlfriend with whom he is precariously and hopelessly entangled. Throughout Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\, Fritz confronts numerous moral crossroads\, challenging his beliefs\, understanding of existence\, and his place in an ultimately unforgiving world. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJoseph Bathanti is the former North Carolina Poet Laureate (2012-14); recipient of the North Carolina Award in Literature\, the state’s highest civilian honor; and an inductee of the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. Author of over twenty books\, Bathanti is McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University in Boone\, North Carolina\, and is the recipient of the Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award. He served as the 2016 Charles George VA Medical Center Writer-in-Residence in Asheville\, NC\, and is the co-founder of the Medical Center’s Creative Writing Program. His co-edited volume\, The Anthology of Black Mountain College Poetry\, from the University of North Carolina Press\, was released in February 2025. His volume of poetry\, Steady Daylight\, from Louisiana State University Press\, is forthcoming in 2026.  \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail.
