Crokinole is a classic Canadian tabletop game — think shuffleboard meets curling\, shrunk onto a round wooden board. It’s easy to learn in a single round and genuinely fun whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned shooter\, and newcomers are always welcome. \nHere’s how it works: Two players (or four\, in teams) sit across from each other and take turns flicking small wooden discs from the outer edge toward the center of the board. The bullseye is a recessed hole in the middle worth 20 points; concentric scoring rings count for less the farther out you land. Guarding the center is a ring of eight small pegs that your disc has to navigate around. \nIf your opponent has any discs on the board\, your shot has to hit one of them. Miss\, and your disc is removed. If the board is clear\, you have to land inside the innermost peg ring\, or your disc comes off. So every turn is a choice between attacking your opponent’s pieces and quietly racking up points of your own. The team plays an Old North State League schedule against opponents from across North Carolina and southern Virginia\, with most games on weekday evenings and weekend afternoons or nights. Tickets are general admission and inexpensive\, so families tend to show up in groups\, find seats close to the action\, and stay through the seventh-inning stretch. \nThe pace is the appeal. Wood bats sound different from the metal you hear at most amateur fields\, the players are all college athletes spending their summer chasing reps\, and the gap between the action and the crowd is small enough that you can hear the catcher talking. Between innings\, the staff runs the kinds of small-park promotions that summer collegiate leagues have built their reputation on: t-shirt tosses\, on-field contests\, kids chasing foul balls in the gravel. If one of those players is staying with a host family two streets over\, you might see him at the diner the next morning. DESCRIPTION:Join The Plant for the Eyes Wide Open Juneteenth Festival on Fri\, Jun 19\, 4pm-11pm. June 19th\, 1865\, is remembered around America as the day the African American people were liberated from slavery. Years of traditions\, culture\, and memories have been passed down since\, reminding future generations of the hardships and struggles endured to get here today. Eyes Wide Open is taking a spin on this cultural day\, providing a space to share Black history and celebrate Black culture. The festival will feature all-African American musical performances from the Raleigh area\, as well as Black businesses at the forefront to support. Other activities include a cards table\, double dutch\, face painting\, cornhole\, mega jenga\, a photobooth\, and a vendor market. The schedule of performances is below: \n\n4pm-5:30pm DJ set.\n6pm EWO.\n6:15pm Antonenow.\n6:40pm Blatti.\n7:05pm Xae Recorded.\n7:30pm Overpade.\n8pm Intermission.\n8:30pm Dearxay.\n8:50pm Star Kid.\n9:10pm Aleo.\n9:25pm Cocoa.\n10pm Njoki.\n\nThe theme for this event is Black Dandy. Doors open at 4pm. Admission is $17.50 online and $15 at the door. Most events are rain or shine; if they have to be canceled\, they will do so as far in advance as possible. Free parking is available onsite. Leashed\, well-behaved pets are allowed outside; pet policies may vary by individual business.
