DESCRIPTION:As part of Chatham County’s year-long celebration of America’s 250th birthday\, the Chatham County Historical Association (CCHA) is hosting an NC History Book Club: Between the Lines\, held on the third Saturday of every month in 2026\, from 9:30am-10:30am. This monthly book club will explore North Carolina’s rich history through engaging nonfiction. Whether you’re a lifelong history lover or are simply curious about the people and events that shaped our state\, join CCHA for conversation and lively discussion. \nRegister here for the June 2026 session\, where you will discuss Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers by David Wright and David Zoby. Fire on the Beach explores the dangers of 19th-century coastal transportation along North Carolina’s “Graveyard of the Atlantic\,” where ships carrying goods and people faced constant danger. Through the story of Richard Etheridge and the all-black crew of the US Life-Saving Service\, the crew faced discrimination and the dangers of the Atlantic\, yet rose to heroism in their service. Participation is free\, and you are welcome to bring friends. This month’s event takes place Sat\, Jun 20\, 9:30am-10:30am at the Chatham County Courthouse and Historical Museum. \nAll are welcome\, and admission is free. DESCRIPTION:Community Organizing for Racial Equity (CORE) welcomes you to participate in their Annual Juneteenth Black Arts Festival on Sat\, Jun 20\, 2026\, 2pm-6pm at the Chatham County Fairgrounds. Since 2018\, the Juneteenth event has undergone significant transformation\, growing from its initial location\, which accommodated 100 people\, to one that now draws over 3\,000 attendees from across the Triangle region. \nJuneteenth Black Arts Festival is a dedicated space of reverence for the impact of Black arts and culture on American culture. They commit to offering an opportunity for Black artists and entrepreneurs to build relationships and increase their exposure across communities. They honor the creative genius and spirit of excellence that prevails within the Black community because they recognize barriers that remain in place today\, excluding them from mainstream business opportunities. \nAll are welcome to this free community event. They have quite a festival planned for this year’s celebration\, which will highlight Black artists\, both local and from afar; educational opportunities about Juneteenth\, the history of the celebration\, and the resilience of Black culture through Black arts; and a vision for liberation. Attendees can also enjoy live entertainment\, art\, a Black business expo\, food trucks\, a heritage walk\, and kids’ activities\, all while challenging stereotypes and building pride in the dynamic heritage of Black Americans and American culture. This year’s featured toy-making projects have not yet been selected\, but previous years have included everything from traditional folk toys to hydraulic robots. \nIn the afternoon\, they have “Anything Goes” choice time\, where campers help design and can request or lead any of their favorite activities. This will include some of their favorite toy-making projects from years past: parachutes\, stomp rockets\, hula hoops\, puppets\, and puppet theaters are all on the list. For those who enjoy running around more\, there will be plenty of running game options in the afternoon as well! \nThe cost is $350 per child. Ages 7-13 are welcome. DESCRIPTION:The Teen Everything Camp at Clapping Hands Farm\, hosted Mon\, Jul 13-Fri\, Jul 17\, 9am-5pm\, is all about teens spending the week outside playing\, exploring\, getting artsy\, and connecting with peers and Clapping Hands’ outstanding staff. Every morning and afternoon\, they will have featured guest artists and choice classes to pick from. You’ll get to a little of everything they have to offer at camp\, thanks to their talented staff\, special guests\, and extensive store of games\, art supplies\, and cool stuff! Possibilities include: \n\nAn unbelievable variety of craft projects and art supplies to use.\nBig games like capture the flag\, ultimate frisbee\, kickball\, and rainbow tag.\nMusic jams\, instrument lessons\, dancing\, and songwriting.\nJournaling\, reading\, and discussing topics you’re interested in.\nExploring the forest\, fields\, trails\, and pond with canoes.\n\nTeens will have the opportunity to request their favorite activities\, and they will include as many of them as possible\, making sure your teen’s identity\, ideas\, and preferences are heard and valued all week long. There will be a sharing for parents and families on Fri\, Jul 17 at 4pm\, followed by a potluck dinner! \nThe cost is $350 per teen. Ages 13-19 are welcome.
