SUMMARY:2025 Annual Fall Cleanup at Jordan Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join Clean Up Jordan Lake for their 2025 Annual Fall Cleanup on Sun\, Nov 2\, 1pm-4pm. This event is part of several larger events\, including The National Environmental Education Foundation’s National Public Lands Day and Keep Durham Beautiful’s Big Sweep 2025 Celebration! Here’s a map showing the area you’ll be covering. Assignments include: \n\nWalkers: You will be divided into groups at registration.\nBoaters: Boaters are needed to haul trash to the dumpster at the Army Corps of Engineers wharf near the dam. They will loan 2-way radios to boaters for communication.\n\nThis year\, they continue their tradition of offering a Trash Treasure Hunt. Items marked by “CJL TTH” are shown to the track captain\, who will issue a CJL business card redeemable for a merchandise prize at the registration table. Coffee and pastries will be available during registration. \nAll volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and work gloves (provided or bring your own). They strongly recommend long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and a hat. Shoreline Track Captains will be present to guide volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with bags\, trash grabbers\, first-aid kits\, water\, and gloves\, if needed. Pontoon boat and operator courtesy of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers \nAll participants must complete a liability waiver form online before the event. Waiver forms for Adults and Minors (age 11-18) must be submitted online by going to: \n\nAdults- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/volunteer-waiver.\nMinors- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/minor-waiver.\n\nDue to potential hazards\, they are unable to allow children under 11 to participate. Children over the age of 11 and under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. \nThe location is the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Game Land Access\, which can be reached by a short gravel road off the end of Seaforth Rd.\, near US 64 in Pittsboro. For GPS\, use 2999 Seaforth Rd\, Pittsboro\, which gets you to the turn onto the gravel road. Follow the signs to parking. Please note that this location is not the Seaforth Access to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. Parking is very limited\, so please carpool or get dropped off to save room along the narrow road. They will have volunteers helping to organize parking. \nIn the event of bad weather\, this event will be postponed to the following Sun\, Nov 9\, 1pm-4pm. DESCRIPTION:Join the Chatham County Historical Association for The American Revolution: Life on the Home Front in Chatham County on Sun\, Nov 2\, 2pm-3:30pm at the Chatham County Historic Courthouse and Museum. \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, most folks think first about the battles that took place during that war. But the majority of people living through the Revolution were not fighters. Their focus was on day-to-day survival\, complicated by shortages of food\, salt\, and currency\, as well as the knowledge that the war could arrive at their doorstep at any moment. \nJim Morgan is the creator of the website AmRevNC\, a website dedicated to the history of the American Revolution battles that took place in North Carolina. He is a writer and journalist with a fierce interest and deep knowledge of the American Revolution and will explain what life was like in Chatham County for these “other revolutionaries” on the home front during the seven long years of war. \nAll are welcome to attend this free event. This event takes place indoors. The historic courthouse meets federal ADA requirements. No pets allowed. Please leave your furry friends at home. DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of Chatham County\, for Fundamentals of Composting\, a workshop on how to compost food and yard waste at home or in a community garden. Food scraps and yard trimmings together account for more than a quarter of household waste. Instead of trucking this waste to the landfill\, consider using composting – the controlled decomposition of organic materials into a soil-like substance – to turn it into a valuable soil amendment. \nParticipants will learn about the science behind the decomposition process\, understand the types of materials that are readily compostable\, and how to fine-tune the composting process by finding optimal temperature\, moisture\, aeration\, and pile dimensions. You will also learn how to troubleshoot common composting problems. Cooperative Extension will present research-based information from NC State Extension Specialist Rhonda Sherman and visit the on-site composting demonstration area. \nThe workshop occurs Thu\, Nov 6\, 9am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center. SUMMARY:Vegan Fall Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready for Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge’s FREE Vegan Fall Potluck on Sat\, Nov 22\, 6pm-8:30pm? These events have been so popular and successful\, and they hope this one will be the best yet! PFAR vegan potlucks are great opportunities for vegans and vegan-curious individuals to meet like-minded people\, engage in meaningful conversations\, and share delicious food. Board games are available on-site\, but please feel free to bring any games from home to share. \nLike always\, this event is free! Here are a couple of important notes: \n\nPlease bring your own plates\, forks\, bowls\, and other eating utensils from home to help make the event environmentally friendly and reduce the use of disposables.\nPlease also bring a note card listing the ingredients in your dish(es) to help those with specific food allergies.\n\nThere is an ADA-certified porta-potty on site\, and a portable handwashing station has also been installed. Please note: Animal residents will not be available during this event\, except for the cows\, which may approach the Pavilion fence line. SUMMARY:Holiday Bazaar at Bynum Front Porch
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for the annual Holiday Bazaar at Bynum Front Porch on Sat\, Nov 29\, 10am-2pm. The Saturday after Thanksgiving\, Bynum wakes up with a sparkle in the air. Down by the old general store\, the front porch is strung with garland and twinkle lights\, and the smell of Bynum’s famous chicken cracker stew drifts out to meet the crowd. \nIt’s Holiday Bazaar day\, and the place hums like a hive. Inside\, tables are stacked with local treasures — hand-thrown pottery still warm from the kiln\, jewel-toned scarves\, hand-poured soaps wrapped in brown paper\, and framed photographs that catch the Haw River in every season. Paintings lean in little clusters\, each one carrying the signature of a neighbor you’ve probably shared a laugh with. Shoppers drift from table to table\, warm cider in one hand\, gift list in the other. \nOutside\, the Bynum Front Porch Pickers are in full swing. Banjo\, fiddle\, guitar — the music rolls out over the lawn\, spilling into the street where folks line up for hot stew\, talking and laughing in puffs of white breath. \nAnd just steps from the front porch\, another tradition is in full gear — Christmas tree pickup. Trucks and SUVs pull in and out\, loading up fresh-cut pines that will soon stand in living rooms all over Chatham County.
