DESCRIPTION:History comes to life on Sun\, May 3\, 12pm-2pm with a Living History Event. The Chatham County Historical Association will host the Jordan Lake School of the Arts in a student-produced living history event to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary. The students have researched figures from Chatham’s past\, including William Hooper\, Lewis Freeman\, and William Siler\, to name a few\, bringing them to life in the historic Chatham County Courthouse. \nStudents in period dress will deliver short talks about their characters. The audience is invited to stroll from one historic figure to another\, meeting and learning about the characters and their impact on Chatham County. This Living History Event is a keystone project in the students’ history curriculum. Come support their efforts and enjoy an afternoon of Chatham County history with an upcoming generation of amazing Chatham County students. Everyone is welcome at this free event. \nThis free community event takes place indoors. The historic courthouse is ADA-compliant. Free parking is available behind the courthouse. No pets allowed. DESCRIPTION:Join Piedmont Farm Animal Refuge for Moral Character and Meat-Eating: A Philosophy Talk by Zach Ferguson on Sat\, May 30\, 11am-1:30pm. Zach Ferguson\, a PhD Candidate and longtime friend of the Refuge\, is returning for an exciting talk! In collaboration with Carolina Public Humanities\, Ferguson will discuss contemporary philosophical debates about the ethics of meat eating. While some modern philosophers have posited that even a pro-animal lifestyle can include animal products\, such as meat that will be thrown away\, Ferguson pushes against this idea. His talk focuses on what it really means to reject speciesism\, arguing that a more just world for all living beings requires changing how people think and feel about animals\, regardless of one’s actions. This talk gets to the core of the challenges and contradictions that face anyone who cares about animal welfare in the present moment. After an hour-long talk\, you’ll be able to meet the chickens and learn their stories before enjoying a delicious free lunch from Pure Soul! \nThis free event takes place outdoors.
