Flaco has been dubbed “the world’s most famous bird.” From the night in February of 2023 when vandals cut a hole in his cage until his death a year later in a courtyard on the Upper West Side\, his is a story full of adventure and unexpected turns. \nNature writer David Gessner chronicles the year-long odyssey of Flaco and the human drama that followed the owl who captured the imaginations of New Yorkers and people worldwide. Though he’d spent his life in a cage\, Flaco learned to survive in New York City by eating rats\, squirrels\, and birds. He was an immigrant coming from elsewhere to make it in the big city. Gessner is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where he also founded the literary magazine Ecotone. SUMMARY:Paint From The Heart
DESCRIPTION:Express your vision with Paint from the Heart. Whatever opens the gate to your creativity and moves it forward is encouraged. Art is a process; it is often called “a journey without an end”. You will focus on creating paintings that reflect confidence while pushing boundaries and exploring new pathways for poetic expression in oil and acrylic. The aim is to use the workshop to try new approaches: exaggerated color\, energetic brushstrokes\, palette knife\, working big and small\, etc. It’s about challenging yourself to leave the comfort of familiar methods and embrace discovery as you let intuition guide your artistic choices with your photographic images. To guide student efforts\, attention to composition\, values\, color harmony\, simplifying\, and use of grays will be reinforced\, as well as discussion of materials\, supports\, brushes\, and mediums. Oil and acrylic painters of all skill levels are welcome to this workshop. The class size is limited to 12 people so that each student can receive individual attention throughout the workshop. He has published widely on issues ranging from the environment to music\, and he is the host of the Our State Book Club podcast. He teaches fiction writing at UNC-Asheville and lives in North Carolina with his wife\, photographer Mallory Cash\, and their daughters. \nJason Mott is a bestselling author\, National Book Award Winner\, Sir Walter Raleigh Award for Fiction Winner\, Pushcart Prize nominee\, NAACP Image Award nominee\, and Carnegie Medals For Excellence Longlist nominee. He has a BFA in Fiction and an MFA in Poetry\, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
