This year\, immerse yourself in a day filled with soulful music\, inspiring art\, enlightening lectures\, hands-on activities\, and heartfelt poetry. Explore diverse cultural perspectives on death; connect with the community at the interactive altar; indulge in delicious food and beverages\, and find unique offerings at their vendor fair. \nSchedule & more! DESCRIPTION:Book Launch: Welcome to Death Faire – Love\, Loss\, and Healing in a Small Southern Town is a soulful collection of stories\, poems\, and images born from a small town’s bold embrace of life\, death\, and everything in between. \nWhat began as a community gathering transformed by grief has grown into a movement that honors death as part of living fully. This book invites you to face loss with honesty\, discover unexpected healing\, and celebrate the beauty of it all. Held at Forest Hall at Chatham Mills\, the event will feature readings\, songs\, and thoughts from the contributors. This will be part church service\, part book reading\, part poetry reading\, part community sing-along\, and mostly a beautiful night with many beautiful souls. The evening will close with book signings and a sense of community. \nYou’ll hear from Tami Schwerin (Curator)\, Lyle Estill\, and Gary Phillips\, with live music from Arlo Estill and friends. Other storytellers include Karen Howard\, Adrian Moreno\, Pepe Caudillo\, Godi Godar\, Jessalyn Kiesa\, Frank Phoenix\, Matt Zemon\, and Cathy Brooksie Edwards. The night will finish with poetry from Paul Jones and Carrboro Poet Laureate Liza Wolff-Francis. \nThis event takes place Thu\, Oct 30\, 6pm-8pm. This event is free\, but pre-registration is recommended—save your spot here. This space is ADA-compliant. Her poems have been nominated for Best of the Net and three times for a Pushcart Prize. Joan is the author of Birthing Age (Finishing Line Press\, 2018)\, Carrying Clare (Main Street Rag\, 2022)\, Orange Tulips (Redhawk Publications\, 2022)\, and Unblessed\, Unsung (Main Street Rag\, 2025).  \nMaria Rouphail is a Senior Lecturer Emerita from North Carolina State University. Flaco has been dubbed “the world’s most famous bird.” From the night in February of 2023 when vandals cut a hole in his cage until his death a year later in a courtyard on the Upper West Side\, his is a story full of adventure and unexpected turns. \nNature writer David Gessner chronicles the year-long odyssey of Flaco and the human drama that followed the owl who captured the imaginations of New Yorkers and people worldwide. Though he’d spent his life in a cage\, Flaco learned to survive in New York City by eating rats\, squirrels\, and birds. He was an immigrant coming from elsewhere to make it in the big city. Central Park\, the island of green in an urban sea\, was his new home territory. \nFlaco’s urban adventure brought controversy\, pitting those who felt he should be returned to the zoo’s safety against those who created the “Free Flaco” movement. The birding world was fractured over the ethics of the online sharing of his location that brought hordes of observers to view him each day. And his end—with a grim necropsy revealing Flaco had suffered a viral infection from eating pigeons and had multiple rodenticides in his system—serves as a Rachel Carson-esque warning about the harm we’ve done to our urban environments\, inspiring the passage of long-sought legislation protecting urban birds and regulations meant to reduce the use of rodenticides in New York City. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDavid Gessner is the author of thirteen books that blend a love of nature\, humor\, memoir\, and environmentalism\, including the New York Times bestselling All the Wild That Remains. Gessner is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where he also founded the literary magazine Ecotone. His magazine publications include pieces in the New York Times Magazine\, Outside\, Orion\, and many other magazines. In 2017\, he hosted the National Geographic Explorer show The Call of the Wild. \nNina de Gramont is the author of the acclaimed Meet Me at the River and Every Little Thing in the World as well as the story collection Of Cats and Men and the adult novel The Gossip of Starlings.
