SUMMARY:Annie Hartnett\, The Road to Tender Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Annie Hartnett\, The Road to Tender Hearts on Sat\, May 24\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\n\nAt sixty-three years old\, million-dollar lottery winner PJ Halliday would be the luckiest man in Pondville\, Massachusetts\, if it weren’t for the tragedies of his life: the sudden death of his eldest daughter and the way his marriage fell apart after that. Since then\, PJ spends both his money and his time at the bar\, and he probably doesn’t have much time left—he’s had three heart attacks already. \nBut when PJ reads the obituary of his old romantic rival\, he realizes his high school sweetheart\, Michelle Cobb\, is finally single again. Filled with a new enthusiasm for life\, PJ drives across the country to the Tender Hearts Retirement Community in Arizona to win Michelle back. \nBefore PJ can hit the road\, tragedy strikes Pondville\, leaving PJ the sudden guardian of his estranged brother’s grandchildren. Anyone else would be deterred from the planned trip\, but PJ figures the orphaned kids might benefit from getting out of town. PJ also thinks he can ask Sophie\, his adult daughter who’s adrift in her twenties\, to come along to babysit. And there’s one more surprise addition to the roster: Pancakes\, a former nursing home therapy cat with a knack for predicting death\, who recently turned up outside PJ’s home. \nThis could be the second chance PJ has long hoped for—a fresh shot at love and parenting—but does he have the strength to do both those things again? It’s very possible his heart can’t take it. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAnnie Hartnett is the author of Unlikely Animals\, which won the Julia Ward Howe Prize for fiction and was longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is also the author of Rabbit Cake\, a finalist for the New England Book Award and a Kirkus Reviews best book of the year. Hartnett has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the MacDowell Colony\, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, and the Associates of the Boston Public Library. Along with writer Tessa Fontaine\, she co-runs the Accountability Workshops for writers\, helping them commit to routines and embrace the long\, slow\, joyful\, terrible process of doing the work. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. See more events at Fearrington Village.

SUMMARY:Brendan Slocumb\, The Dark Maestro
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Brendan Slocumb\, The Dark Maestro on Sat\, May 17\, 2pm-3pm. From the author of The Violin Conspiracy and Symphony of Secrets comes a mesmerizing page-turner about a musical virtuoso who’s forced into hiding when his family runs afoul of a ruthless criminal organization—and how he uses music to bring his enemies to justice. A propulsive and moving story about sacrifice\, loyalty\, and the indomitable human spirit\, The Dark Maestro is Slocumb at the height of his powers. \nBOOK SUMMARY \nCurtis Wilson is a cello prodigy\, growing up in the Southeast D.C. projects with a drug dealer for a father. But through determination and talent\, and the loving support of his father’s girlfriend\, Larissa\, Curtis claws his way out of his challenging circumstances and rises to unimagined heights in the classical music world—even soloing with the New York Philharmonic. \nAnd then\, suddenly\, his life disintegrates. His father\, Zippy\, turns state’s evidence\, implicating his old bosses to the FBI. Now the family—Curtis included—must enter the witness protection program if they want to survive. This means Curtis must give up what he loves most: sharing his extraordinary musical talents with the world. When Zippy’s bosses prove too elusive for law enforcement to convict them\, Curtis\, Zippy\, and Larissa realize that their only chance of survival is to take on the cartel themselves. They must create new identities and draw on their unique talents\, including Curtis’s musical ability\, to go after those who want them dead. But will it be enough to keep Curtis and his family alive? \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nBrendan Nicholaus Slocumb was raised in Fayetteville\, North Carolina\, and holds a degree in music education (with concentrations in violin and viola) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For more than twenty years\, he has been a public and private school music educator and has performed with orchestras throughout Northern Virginia\, Maryland\, and Washington\, D.C. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Patti Callahan Henry\, The Story She Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for this Author Event\, “The Story She Left Behind\,” in conversation with Patti Callahan Henry and Frances Mayes on Sat\, Mar 22\, 11am-12pm. \n\n\n\nInspired by an actual literary mystery\, the New York Times bestselling author of the mesmerizing The Secret Book of Flora Lea returns with the sweeping story of a legendary book\, a lost mother\, and a daughter’s search for them both. Told in Patti Callahan Henry’s lyrical\, enchanting prose\, The Story She Left Behind is a captivating novel of mystery and family legacy that captures the profound longing for a mother and the evergreen allure of secrets. \nThis is a ticketed event. Buy a copy of  “The Story She Left Behind” and gain entrance for you and a friend. \n\n\n\nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\n\nIn 1927\, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother\, renowned author Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham\, disappears off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was twelve. Her departure leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author\, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beautiful mother. \nBy 1952\, Clara is an illustrator raising her own daughter\, Wynnie. When a stranger named Charlie Jameson contacts her from London\, claiming to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical. Compelled by the tragedy of her mother’s vanishing\, she crosses the Atlantic with Wynnie only to arrive during one of London’s most deadly natural disasters—the Great Smog. With asthmatic Wynnie in peril\, they escape the city with Charlie and find refuge in the Jameson’s family retreat nestled in the Lake District. It is there that Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nPatti Callahan Henry is the New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of several novels\, including “Surviving Savannah” and “Becoming Mrs. Lewis.” She is the recipient of the Christy Award\, the Harper Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the Year Award\, and the Alabama Library Association Book of the Year. She is the cohost and co-creator of the popular weekly online live web show and podcast “Friends and Fiction.” She lives in Alabama and South Carolina with her family. \nFrances Mayes is the author of the now-classic “Under the Tuscan Sun\,” which was a New York Times bestseller for more than two and a half years and became a Touchstone movie starring Diane Lane. SUMMARY:"The Book of Flaco" with David Gessner and Nina de Gramont
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for this Author Event\, “The Book of Flaco\,” with David Gessner and Nina de Gramont on Sat\, Mar 15\, 11am-12pm. Discover the story of Flaco\, the Eurasian eagle-owl who escaped from Central Park Zoo and captured the hearts and imaginations of millions of followers from around the world. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\n\nThis is a parable of freedom\, wildness\, and our urban ecosystems. Flaco has been dubbed “the world’s most famous bird.” From the night in February of 2023 when vandals cut a hole in his cage until his death a year later in a courtyard on the Upper West Side\, his is a story full of adventure and unexpected turns. \nNature writer David Gessner chronicles the year-long odyssey of Flaco and the human drama that followed the owl who captured the imaginations of New Yorkers and people worldwide. Though he’d spent his life in a cage\, Flaco learned to survive in New York City by eating rats\, squirrels\, and birds. He was an immigrant coming from elsewhere to make it in the big city. Central Park\, the island of green in an urban sea\, was his new home territory. \nFlaco’s urban adventure brought controversy\, pitting those who felt he should be returned to the zoo’s safety against those who created the “Free Flaco” movement. The birding world was fractured over the ethics of the online sharing of his location that brought hordes of observers to view him each day. And his end—with a grim necropsy revealing Flaco had suffered a viral infection from eating pigeons and had multiple rodenticides in his system—serves as a Rachel Carson-esque warning about the harm we’ve done to our urban environments\, inspiring the passage of long-sought legislation protecting urban birds and regulations meant to reduce the use of rodenticides in New York City. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nDavid Gessner is the author of thirteen books that blend a love of nature\, humor\, memoir\, and environmentalism\, including the New York Times bestselling All the Wild That Remains. Gessner is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where he also founded the literary magazine Ecotone. His magazine publications include pieces in the New York Times Magazine\, Outside\, Orion\, and many other magazines. In 2017\, he hosted the National Geographic Explorer show The Call of the Wild. \nNina de Gramont is the author of the acclaimed Meet Me at the River and Every Little Thing in the World as well as the story collection Of Cats and Men and the adult novel The Gossip of Starlings. Her work has appeared in Redbook\, Harvard Review\, Nerve\, and Seventeen. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:"Southern News\, Southern Politics" with Rob Christiansen
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for this Author Event\, “Southern News\, Southern Politics: How a Newspaper Defined a State for a Century\,” with Rob Christiansen on Sat\, Mar 8\, 11am-12pm. Discover the surprising history of North Carolina’s best-known newspaper. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\n\nHere\, Christensen tells the story of the N&O and how it helped shape modern North Carolina in complicated ways. It’s also the story of a family dynasty: four generations of the Daniels family owned and ran the N&O. They not only helped elect governors but also played an influential role in national American politics—family members served as political lieutenants to William Jennings Bryan\, Woodrow Wilson\, Franklin Roosevelt\, and Harry Truman. \nChristensen takes readers from the N&O’s early days at the turn of the twentieth century as the militant voice of white supremacy to its denunciation by segregationist Jesse Helms for “selling out the South” in the 1960s and finally to its dwindling current fortunes. By telling the story of one important regional newspaper\, Christensen shows how influence and messaging affect the politics of a state and a region for generations. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nNewspapers are a tough business\, and no one knows that better than Rob Christensen\, who was chief political reporter and columnist at North Carolina’s capital newspaper\, the News and Observer in Raleigh\, for decades. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:"Dancing Woman" with Elaine Nell Orr and Diane Chamberlain
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for this Author Event\, “Dancing Woman” with Elaine Nell Orr and Diane Chamberlain on Sat\, Feb 8\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\n\nIt’s 1963\, and Isabel Hammond\, an expat accompanying her agriculture aid worker husband to Nigeria\, is hoping to find inspiration for her art and her life. Then she meets charismatic local singer Bobby Tunde\, and they share a night of passion that could upend everything. Seeking solace and distraction\, she returns to her painting and her home in a rural town\, where she plants a lemon tree and unearths an ancient statue buried in her garden. She knows that the dancing female figure is not hers to keep\, yet she is reluctant to give it up\, and soon\, she notices other changes that make her wonder what the dancing woman might portend. \nAgainst the backdrop of political unrest in Nigeria\, Isabel’s situation also becomes precarious. She finds herself in the center of a tide of suspicion\, torn between the confines of her domestic life and the desire to immerse herself in her art and the culture surrounding her. The expat society\, the ancient Nigerian culture\, her family\, and even the statue hidden in a back room—each trouble and beguile Isabel. Amid all this\, can she finally become who she wants to be? \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nElaine Neil Orr is the author of five books\, including the novels “A Different Sun” and “Swimming Between Worlds.” Born and raised in Nigeria as the daughter of missionary parents\, Orr’s work is deeply rooted in the landscapes of the American South and the Nigerian South. She is a faculty member at North Carolina State University and the Naslund-Mann Graduate School of Writing at Spalding University. \nDiane Chamberlain is the New York Times\, USA Today\, and Sunday Times bestselling author of 27 novels published in over twenty languages. Influenced by her former career as a social worker and psychotherapist\, she writes suspenseful stories that touch both heart and mind. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail.
