SUMMARY:Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days on Sat\, Aug 30\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nJoseph Bathanti’s novella\, “Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\,” follows Fritz Sweeney through a pivotal summer in 1973\, set against the backdrop of working-class Pittsburgh. Fritz grapples with an existential crisis triggered by his job at Acme Toy Warehouse\, which he finds absurd and meaningless. This sense of absurdity is deepened by his fascination with Albert Camus’s philosophy\, as seen in “The Myth of Sisyphus” and “The Stranger\,” which he was introduced to during his first college literature class by an enigmatic Vietnam veteran professor. Further complicating Fritz’s life is his relationship with Claire Raffo\, his mysterious girlfriend with whom he is precariously and hopelessly entangled. Throughout Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\, Fritz confronts numerous moral crossroads\, challenging his beliefs\, understanding of existence\, and his place in an ultimately unforgiving world. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJoseph Bathanti is the former North Carolina Poet Laureate (2012-14); recipient of the North Carolina Award in Literature\, the state’s highest civilian honor; and an inductee of the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. Author of over twenty books\, Bathanti is McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University in Boone\, North Carolina\, and is the recipient of the Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award. He served as the 2016 Charles George VA Medical Center Writer-in-Residence in Asheville\, NC\, and is the co-founder of the Medical Center’s Creative Writing Program. His co-edited volume\, The Anthology of Black Mountain College Poetry\, from the University of North Carolina Press\, was released in February 2025. His volume of poetry\, Steady Daylight\, from Louisiana State University Press\, is forthcoming in 2026.  \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Sharon Kurtzman\, The Lost Baker of Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Sharon Kurtzman\, The Lost Baker of Vienna on Sat\, Aug 23\, 11am-12pm. The Lost Baker of Vienna affirms the unbreakable bonds of family\, shining a light on the courageous spirit of WWII refugees as they battle to survive the overwhelming hardships of a world torn apart. It’s a historical novel inspired by the author’s own family’s experiences after the Holocaust\, and a sweeping saga about survival\, loss\, love\, and the reverberating effects of war. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nIn 2018\, Zoe Rosenzweig is reeling after the loss of her beloved grandfather\, a Holocaust survivor. She becomes obsessed with finding out what really happened to her family during the war. \nVienna\, 1946: Chana Rosenzweig has endured the horrors of war to find herself\, her mother\, and her younger brother finally free in Vienna. But freedom doesn’t look like they’d imagined it would\, as they struggle to make a living and stay safe. \nDespite the danger\, Chana sneaks out most nights to return to the hotel kitchen where she works as a dishwasher\, using the quiet nighttime hours to bake her late father’s recipes. Soon\, Chana finds herself caught in a dangerous love triangle\, torn between the black-market dealer who has offered marriage and protection\, and the apprentice baker who shares her passions. How will Chana balance her love of baking against her family’s need for security? \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nSharon Kurtzman worked in television marketing before pursuing her dream of becoming a writer. She earned her MFA in fiction from Vermont College of Fine Arts and her undergraduate degree from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. The Lost Baker of Vienna was inspired by the war and postwar experiences of her own family\, who were Holocaust survivors. Kurtzman lives in North Carolina with her husband; they have two adult children. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Kate Hash\, Gracie Harris is Under Construction
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Kate Hash\, Gracie Harris is Under Construction\, in Conversation with Annie McQuaid on Sat\, Aug 16\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nIn this resplendent debut novel\, a beautiful love story unfolds for tenderhearted Gracie Harris—a mom of two and recent widow—as she navigates the unexpected curveballs that adulthood throws and takes her second chance to find love. \nGracie Harris never intended to become the queen of grief. But when an essay she writes the night of her husband Ben’s memorial goes viral\, she lands a popular column on love and loss and an impressive book deal. \nNow\, the biggest tragedy of her life is the center of her world. With a looming book deadline and her kids at summer camp\, Gracie escapes for a summer of solitude to the ramshackle mountain house she and Ben bought for their family before his death. When charming contractor Josh arrives on her doorstep to help renovate the home\, Gracie discovers an unexpected connection that is energizing… and surprisingly flirtatious. \nAs her feelings and resilience grow\, Gracie must decide whether she’s ready to embrace a new version of her life. Gracie’s first Happily Ever After didn’t last as long as she’d expected. Now she has to wonder: Could Josh be her chance for a second great love story? \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nKate Hash is a Chapel Hill\, NC-based debut novelist who enjoys creating and consuming stories about dynamic women\, unexpected relationships\, and the complexity that comes with entering midlife. She has lived in Italy\, run a business\, and even appeared on an episode of House Hunters International (one of her favorite “two truths and a lie” facts). During her four years abroad in the early 2010s\, Kate operated a popular travel blog and contributed guides to the much-beloved Design*Sponge. Kate is currently the Assistant Vice Chancellor for IT at the University of North Carolina and is mildly obsessed with college towns and the creative energy they produce. \nAnnie McQuaid resides in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, and serves as the marketing director for an education technology company. When she’s not putting her characters in life-or-death situations\, you can find her visiting the beach\, tackling her never-ending TBR\, or spending time with her adorable nieces. “Crash Landing” is her debut novel. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Abraham Verghese\, The Covenant of Water
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Abraham Verghese\, The Covenant of Water on Wed\, Jun 4\, 7pm-8pm. McIntyre’s is delighted to welcome back Dr. Abraham Verghese for a special event to celebrate the paperback release of his New York Times blockbuster novel\, The Covenant of Water. Dr. Verghese will discuss with WUNC’s Anita Rao\, the award-winning journalist\, host\, creator\, and executive editor of “Embodied\,” a weekly radio show and podcast about sex\, relationships & health. \nTo attend\, one must purchase a copy of The Covenant of Water from McIntyre’s. If you are bringing a guest\, they will need to purchase a sidecar book of either The Covenant of Water or one of Dr. Verghese’s other books: Cutting for Stone\, The Tennis Partner\, or My Own Country. To purchase your copy of The Covenant of Water\, click here. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nThe Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel by Abraham Verghese\, the author of the major word-of-mouth bestseller Cutting for Stone\, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. \nSpanning the years 1900 to 1977\, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala\, on South India’s Malabar Coast\, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation\, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala\, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century\, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community\, grieving the death of her father\, is sent by boat to her wedding\, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning\, the young girl—and future matriarch\, known as Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life\, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss\, her faith and love the only constants. \nA shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself\, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding\, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAbraham Verghese is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the author of the NBCC Award finalist My Own Country and the New York Times Notable Book\, The Tennis Partner. His most recent book\, Cutting for Stone\, spent 107 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and sold over two million copies worldwide. It was translated into over twenty languages and is being adapted for film by Anonymous Content. Verghese was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama\, has received six honorary degrees\, and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He lives and practices medicine in Stanford\, California\, where he is the Linda R. Meier and Joan F. Lane Provostial Professor in the Stanford University School of Medicine. A decade in the making\, The Covenant of Water is his first book since Cutting for Stone. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. SUMMARY:Annie Hartnett\, The Road to Tender Hearts
DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Annie Hartnett\, The Road to Tender Hearts on Sat\, May 24\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\n\nAt sixty-three years old\, million-dollar lottery winner PJ Halliday would be the luckiest man in Pondville\, Massachusetts\, if it weren’t for the tragedies of his life: the sudden death of his eldest daughter and the way his marriage fell apart after that. Since then\, PJ spends both his money and his time at the bar\, and he probably doesn’t have much time left—he’s had three heart attacks already. \nBut when PJ reads the obituary of his old romantic rival\, he realizes his high school sweetheart\, Michelle Cobb\, is finally single again. Filled with a new enthusiasm for life\, PJ drives across the country to the Tender Hearts Retirement Community in Arizona to win Michelle back. \nBefore PJ can hit the road\, tragedy strikes Pondville\, leaving PJ the sudden guardian of his estranged brother’s grandchildren. Anyone else would be deterred from the planned trip\, but PJ figures the orphaned kids might benefit from getting out of town. PJ also thinks he can ask Sophie\, his adult daughter who’s adrift in her twenties\, to come along to babysit. And there’s one more surprise addition to the roster: Pancakes\, a former nursing home therapy cat with a knack for predicting death\, who recently turned up outside PJ’s home. \nThis could be the second chance PJ has long hoped for—a fresh shot at love and parenting—but does he have the strength to do both those things again? It’s very possible his heart can’t take it. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nAnnie Hartnett is the author of Unlikely Animals\, which won the Julia Ward Howe Prize for fiction and was longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is also the author of Rabbit Cake\, a finalist for the New England Book Award and a Kirkus Reviews best book of the year. Hartnett has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the MacDowell Colony\, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference\, and the Associates of the Boston Public Library. Along with writer Tessa Fontaine\, she co-runs the Accountability Workshops for writers\, helping them commit to routines and embrace the long\, slow\, joyful\, terrible process of doing the work. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband\, daughter\, and dog. \nFearrington Village is part of the Chatham County Craft Beverages & Country Inns Trail. See more events at Fearrington Village.
