DESCRIPTION:Join the Chatham County Historical Association for The American Revolution: Life on the Home Front in Chatham County on Sun\, Nov 2\, 2pm-3:30pm at the Chatham County Historic Courthouse and Museum. \nAs we approach the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, most folks think first about the battles that took place during that war. But the majority of people living through the Revolution were not fighters. Their focus was on day-to-day survival\, complicated by shortages of food\, salt\, and currency\, as well as the knowledge that the war could arrive at their doorstep at any moment. \nJim Morgan is the creator of the website AmRevNC\, a website dedicated to the history of the American Revolution battles that took place in North Carolina. He is a writer and journalist with a fierce interest and deep knowledge of the American Revolution and will explain what life was like in Chatham County for these “other revolutionaries” on the home front during the seven long years of war. \nAll are welcome to attend this free event. This event takes place indoors. The historic courthouse meets federal ADA requirements. No pets allowed. Please leave your furry friends at home. DESCRIPTION:Book Launch: Welcome to Death Faire – Love\, Loss\, and Healing in a Small Southern Town is a soulful collection of stories\, poems\, and images born from a small town’s bold embrace of life\, death\, and everything in between. \nWhat began as a community gathering transformed by grief has grown into a movement that honors death as part of living fully. This book invites you to face loss with honesty\, discover unexpected healing\, and celebrate the beauty of it all. Held at Forest Hall at Chatham Mills\, the event will feature readings\, songs\, and thoughts from the contributors. This will be part church service\, part book reading\, part poetry reading\, part community sing-along\, and mostly a beautiful night with many beautiful souls. The evening will close with book signings and a sense of community. \nYou’ll hear from Tami Schwerin (Curator)\, Lyle Estill\, and Gary Phillips\, with live music from Arlo Estill and friends. Other storytellers include Karen Howard\, Adrian Moreno\, Pepe Caudillo\, Godi Godar\, Jessalyn Kiesa\, Frank Phoenix\, Matt Zemon\, and Cathy Brooksie Edwards. It inhabits the present\, the past\, and even the future as we look toward it. Through firsthand accounts and deep research\, Justin Laborde brings their stories of courage\, sacrifice\, and survival vividly to life. \nScattered Far and Wide tells the war stories of U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen from the Class of 1938. Commissioned on the eve of World War II\, they bore the new burden of command while at the forefront of the Pacific War’s most significant and most pivotal campaigns. They felt the wind and spray in their faces\, and the percussion of ships’ guns and depth charges at the pivotal moment in their lives and careers\, making their experiences unusually compelling\, heartbreaking\, and—most assuredly—instructive. \nFrom Pearl Harbor through the end of the war\, these men fought and struggled for survival as part of the U.S. Navy’s Asiatic Fleet. In the early months of the conflict\, they tried to stem the onslaught of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Some were captured and sent to brutal prisoner-of-war camps. DESCRIPTION:Join McIntyre’s Books for Joseph Bathanti\, Too Glorious to Even Long For on Certain Days on Sat\, Aug 30\, 11am-12pm. \nBOOK SUMMARY \n\n\nJoseph Bathanti’s novella\, “Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\,” follows Fritz Sweeney through a pivotal summer in 1973\, set against the backdrop of working-class Pittsburgh. Fritz grapples with an existential crisis triggered by his job at Acme Toy Warehouse\, which he finds absurd and meaningless. This sense of absurdity is deepened by his fascination with Albert Camus’s philosophy\, as seen in “The Myth of Sisyphus” and “The Stranger\,” which he was introduced to during his first college literature class by an enigmatic Vietnam veteran professor. Further complicating Fritz’s life is his relationship with Claire Raffo\, his mysterious girlfriend with whom he is precariously and hopelessly entangled. Throughout Too Glorious to Even Long for on Certain Days\, Fritz confronts numerous moral crossroads\, challenging his beliefs\, understanding of existence\, and his place in an ultimately unforgiving world. \n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nJoseph Bathanti is the former North Carolina Poet Laureate (2012-14); recipient of the North Carolina Award in Literature\, the state’s highest civilian honor; and an inductee of the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame. Author of over twenty books\, Bathanti is McFarlane Family Distinguished Professor of Interdisciplinary Education at Appalachian State University in Boone\, North Carolina\, and is the recipient of the Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award. He served as the 2016 Charles George VA Medical Center Writer-in-Residence in Asheville\, NC\, and is the co-founder of the Medical Center’s Creative Writing Program. His co-edited volume\, The Anthology of Black Mountain College Poetry\, from the University of North Carolina Press\, was released in February 2025.
