See all events at MOSAIC. \nBOOK SUMMARY \nThe Magician opens in a provincial German city at the turn of the twentieth century\, where the boy\, Thomas Mann\, grows up with a conservative father\, bound by propriety\, and a Brazilian mother\, alluring and unpredictable. Young Mann hides his artistic aspirations from his father and his homosexual desires from everyone. He is infatuated with one of the richest\, most cultured Jewish families in Munich\, and marries the daughter\, Katia. They have six children. On a holiday in Italy\, he longs for a boy he sees on a beach and writes the story Death in Venice. He is the most successful novelist of his time\, winner of the Nobel Prize in literature\, a public man whose private life remains secret. He is expected to lead the condemnation of Hitler\, whom he underestimates. His oldest daughter and son\, leaders of Bohemianism and of the anti-Nazi movement\, share lovers. He flees Germany for Switzerland\, France\, and\, ultimately\, America\, living first in Princeton and then in Los Angeles. In this “exquisitely sensitive” (The Wall Street Journal) novel\, Tóibín has crafted “a complex but empathetic portrayal of a writer in a lifelong battle against his innermost desires\, his family\, and the tumultuous times they endure” (Time)\, and “you’ll find yourself savoring every page” (Vogue).

SUMMARY:NC History Book Club: Between the Lines
DESCRIPTION:As part of Chatham County’s year-long celebration of America’s 250th birthday\, the Chatham County Historical Association (CCHA) is hosting an NC History Book Club: Between the Lines\, held on the third Saturday of every month in 2026\, from 9:30am-10:30am. This monthly book club will explore North Carolina’s rich history through engaging nonfiction. Whether you’re a lifelong history lover or are simply curious about the people and events that shaped our state\, join CCHA for conversation and lively discussion. \nRegister here for the June 2026 session\, where you will discuss Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers by David Wright and David Zoby. Fire on the Beach explores the dangers of 19th-century coastal transportation along North Carolina’s “Graveyard of the Atlantic\,” where ships carrying goods and people faced constant danger. Through the story of Richard Etheridge and the all-black crew of the US Life-Saving Service\, the crew faced discrimination and the dangers of the Atlantic\, yet rose to heroism in their service. Participation is free\, and you are welcome to bring friends. This month’s event takes place Sat\, Jun 20\, 9:30am-10:30am at the Chatham County Courthouse and Historical Museum. \nAll are welcome\, and admission is free.
