SUMMARY:Trails and Treats
DESCRIPTION:Join Chatham Community Library and Friends of the Lower Haw for Trails and Treats on Sat\, May 2\, 10am-11am. Trails and Treats is the first statewide trail guide written by women in NC\, combining two favorite activities – hiking and trail running – with tasty treats that can top off your outdoor adventures. Authors Hollis Oberlies and Palmer McIntyre created this guidebook for people of all ages and abilities who want to plan a fun day exploring our state. They have selected hikes and runs in four general areas of the state – the mountains\, the Triad\, the Triangle\, and the Charlotte area. Often\, there is a trail near your home that will bring joy and gratitude\, and a workout if that’s your goal. The authors have included trail tips to help you plan your adventures\, as well as recommendations for some tasty local places to eat. Their book also includes some of their favorite breakfast and trail snack recipes that are easy to whip up\, tasty\, and nourishing. The authors hope this guide inspires you to try these trails and eats\, and to explore others throughout North Carolina or wherever you go! \nBecause 2026 is the 20th Anniversary of the Haw River Trail\, this event will include a brief presentation by Friends of Lower Haw River about the Haw River State Trail and Chatham County’s local gem\, the Lower Haw River State Natural Area. Friends of Lower Haw River is a member of the trail organizations Friends of Haw River State Trail and the Great Trails State Coalition. The event is free and open to the public. As the evening goes on\, the couple ends up in a heated argument that sends Asa to sleep out in their garage apartment for the first time in twenty-five years of marriage. The next morning\, he wakes to blue sky and an altered world.    \nUnfolding over a few tense weeks and told from multiple points of view\, this novel explores how a tragedy can assume as many shapes as the people it touches. Asa finds himself reckoning with torn feelings about his marriage and confusion about how to proceed in his complicated relationships with his adult children. DESCRIPTION:The Artful Life Camp at Clapping Hands Farm\, hosted Mon\, May 11-Fri\, May 15\, 9am-5pm\, brings together Clapping Hands Farm alums and brand new people who share the experience of being young adults who value living intentionally and creatively in a community. You do not have to identify as an artist to come to this camp\, but you will explore the artistic process both for the joy of creating and seeing what these creative endeavors can show and teach you about how to live. Activities will include: \n\nGetting messy with visual arts.\nMoving and grooving with music and dance.\nDiving deep into your journals\, stories\, and conversations.\nGetting silly with random activities.\nProtecting space for some “serious” relaxation.\nPlaying hard with some big all-camp games.\n\nThe day will include a variety of workshops in the morning and afternoon: \n\nDrumming\, songwriting\, and music jams.\nBook and printmaking.\nFinger painting and body art.\nForaging and nature mandalas.\nArchery and ultimate frisbee.\nNap time with Kora music.\n\nThe camp day will also include morning and closing circles\, a small-group check-in\, and an invitation to begin the day with meditation\, movement\, or art. Guest artists will share about their Artful Life\, with a chance to reflect on your own journey after hearing their story. On Friday\, the camp day is extended for a Burrito Bash potluck. \nLouise Omoto Kessel will be your guide for this week\, along with an excellent selection of guest artists. Louise is a storyteller and a printmaker\, and she loves to felt\, collage\, and make all manner of things. She is also the founder and director of Clapping Hands Farm and the mother of two young adults. \nThe cost is $325 per person. Ages 19-30 are welcome. DESCRIPTION:As part of Chatham County’s year-long celebration of America’s 250th birthday\, the Chatham County Historical Association (CCHA) is hosting an NC History Book Club: Between the Lines\, held on the third Saturday of every month in 2026\, from 9:30am-10:30am. This monthly book club will explore North Carolina’s rich history through engaging nonfiction. Whether you’re a lifelong history lover or are simply curious about the people and events that shaped our state\, join CCHA for conversation and lively discussion. \nThe April selection is ‘Naked Genius’\, by George Moses Horton\, a book of poetry first published in 1865. George Moses Horton was the first African American author to be published in the United States. Born a slave on a North Carolina tobacco plantation\, he was named the Poet Laureate of Chatham County\, where he spent most of his life. This month’s event takes place Sat\, Apr 18\, 9:30am-10:30am at the Chatham County Courthouse and Historical Museum. \nAll are welcome\, and admission is free.
