Down by the old general store\, the front porch is strung with garland and twinkle lights\, and the smell of Bynum’s famous chicken cracker stew drifts out to meet the crowd. \nIt’s Holiday Bazaar day\, and the place hums like a hive. Inside\, tables are stacked with local treasures — hand-thrown pottery still warm from the kiln\, jewel-toned scarves\, hand-poured soaps wrapped in brown paper\, and framed photographs that catch the Haw River in every season. Paintings lean in little clusters\, each one carrying the signature of a neighbor you’ve probably shared a laugh with. Shoppers drift from table to table\, warm cider in one hand\, gift list in the other. \nOutside\, the Bynum Front Porch Pickers are in full swing. Banjo\, fiddle\, guitar — the music rolls out over the lawn\, spilling into the street where folks line up for hot stew\, talking and laughing in puffs of white breath. \nAnd just steps from the front porch\, another tradition is in full gear — Christmas tree pickup. Trucks and SUVs pull in and out\, loading up fresh-cut pines that will soon stand in living rooms all over Chatham County. This event is part of several larger events\, including The National Environmental Education Foundation’s National Public Lands Day and Keep Durham Beautiful’s Big Sweep 2025 Celebration! Here’s a map showing the area you’ll be covering. Assignments include: \n\nWalkers: You will be divided into groups at registration.\nBoaters: Boaters are needed to haul trash to the dumpster at the Army Corps of Engineers wharf near the dam. They will loan 2-way radios to boaters for communication.\n\nThis year\, they continue their tradition of offering a Trash Treasure Hunt. Items marked by “CJL TTH” are shown to the track captain\, who will issue a CJL business card redeemable for a merchandise prize at the registration table. Coffee and pastries will be available during registration. \nAll volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes and work gloves (provided or bring your own). They strongly recommend long pants\, a long-sleeve shirt\, and a hat. Shoreline Track Captains will be present to guide volunteers. Volunteers will be provided with bags\, trash grabbers\, first-aid kits\, water\, and gloves\, if needed. Pontoon boat and operator courtesy of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers \nAll participants must complete a liability waiver form online before the event. Waiver forms for Adults and Minors (age 11-18) must be submitted online by going to: \n\nAdults- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/volunteer-waiver.\nMinors- https://www.cleanjordanlake.org/minor-waiver.\n\nDue to potential hazards\, they are unable to allow children under 11 to participate. Wildlife Resources Commission Game Land Access\, which can be reached by a short gravel road off the end of Seaforth Rd.\, near US 64 in Pittsboro. For GPS\, use 2999 Seaforth Rd\, Pittsboro\, which gets you to the turn onto the gravel road. Follow the signs to parking. Please note that this location is not the Seaforth Access to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. Parking is very limited\, so please carpool or get dropped off to save room along the narrow road. Take a walk through downtown Pittsboro for an evening filled with local folklore and historical reenactments. The tour blends Chatham’s rich heritage with stories and legends\, all presented by costumed interpreters portraying figures from the town’s past. \nThe journey begins at the historic courthouse and winds through old cemeteries\, churches\, and hidden corners\, with each stop offering a window into the lives of the people and moments that shaped Pittsboro. The tour will take place on the following dates: \n\nSat\, Oct 18\, 5:30pm-7:30pm.\nSun\, Oct 19\, 5:30pm-7:30pm.\n\nEVENT DETAILS \n\nCheck-in is at 5:15pm\, with the tour starting promptly at 5:30pm both days.\nAge Requirement: 12 years and older only (no pets or strollers).\nWeather: Rain or shine (rescheduled only in case of severe weather).\nThis tour takes place indoors and outside\, lasting between 90 and 120 minutes.\nBring a flashlight. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.\nA liability waiver will be required at check-in.\nLimited to 60 participants per evening\, split into three small groups for a more personal experience.\nFree parking is available behind the new Chatham County Courthouse and Justice Center.\nPets are not allowed; please leave your furry friends at home.\nAccessibility: Tour participants will need to be able to navigate stairs\, outdoor sidewalks\, and grassy areas.\n\nTickets are $25 for CCHA members and $30 per person for nonmembers.
