SUMMARY:Tobacco Road Marathon
DESCRIPTION:The Tobacco Road Marathon and Half-Marathon feature over 20 miles of the American Tobacco Trail (including 4 miles of Chatham County\, NC). Up to twenty percent of their runners qualify for the Legendary Boston Marathon. Less experienced runners benefit\, too\, as the fast and flat energy-absorbing course and ideal spring temperatures make it an excellent venue for your next personal record!  \nThe 16th Annual Tobacco Road Marathon and Half Marathon is Sun\, Mar 14\, 2027. As in prior years\, both races will begin at 7am on Brooks Park Lane and head towards the entrance of Thomas Brooks Park. The first and last 2.5 miles of both races are on paved roadways. The ATT surface is compacted screenings\, with some sections combining this with asphalt. \nWhether you are participating or cheering for a friend or family member\, there is plenty to do in our area – local eateries\, places to stay\, craft beverage tastings and tours\, wineries\, nature activities\, golf\, shopping\, and more. Take advantage of all that Chatham County has to offer!  \nThe Tobacco Road Marathon is organized by a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing partner charities with financial assistance by channeling passionate runners everywhere\, particularly those in the North Carolina Triangle area\, into a powerful force for good. Over the years\, the event has raised over $1.7 million for charities\, including the American Red Cross\, JDRF\, Hope for the Warriors\, and Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy (ATT is a Rails to Trails project).  \nThe inaugural event was held Mar 21\, 2010\, with over 3\,400 registered runners representing 39 states. Approximately 4\,000 runners and thousands of spectators will attend this year’s event. In 2014\, Runner’s World Magazine named the Tobacco Road Marathon one of the top ten best new marathons.

This year’s theme\, “We Walk This Path Together\,” brings together history\, fellowship\, and celebration. The Pittsboro celebration reflects the unique history and vibrant diversity of Chatham County. \nThe day begins at 9:30am with a Mindful Unity Walk from Pittsboro’s Pop-Up Park (50 W. Salisbury Street). Participants will walk together through downtown\, accompanied by live Peruvian music to George Moses Horton Middle School (79 Horton Street\, Pittsboro). Free Race Amity Day T-Shirts will be available for the first 100 walkers. \nNot up for the walk? No worries! Join them for the day’s festivities at George Moses Horton Middle School at 10am\, for fellowship\, family\, activities\, music\, food trucks\, and free ice cream compliments of Circle City Ice Cream. This is an opportunity to share a meal and build connections. The day continues from 1pm-3:30pm with a Race Amity Day proclamation\, a special message of encouragement recognizing the importance of this work\, remarks from invited civic leaders\, and music and dramatic performances that reflect the spirit of unity and shared humanity. As part of the program\, community organizations will host informational tables\, offering opportunities for engagement and continued dialogue. DESCRIPTION:Community Organizing for Racial Equity (CORE) welcomes you to participate in their Annual Juneteenth Black Arts Festival on Sat\, Jun 20\, 2026\, 2pm-6pm at the Chatham County Fairgrounds. Since 2018\, the Juneteenth event has undergone significant transformation\, growing from its initial location\, which accommodated 100 people\, to one that now draws over 3\,000 attendees from across the Triangle region. \nJuneteenth Black Arts Festival is a dedicated space of reverence for the impact of Black arts and culture on American culture. They commit to offering an opportunity for Black artists and entrepreneurs to build relationships and increase their exposure across communities. They honor the creative genius and spirit of excellence that prevails within the Black community because they recognize barriers that remain in place today\, excluding them from mainstream business opportunities. \nAll are welcome to this free community event. They have quite a festival planned for this year’s celebration\, which will highlight Black artists\, both local and from afar; educational opportunities about Juneteenth\, the history of the celebration\, and the resilience of Black culture through Black arts; and a vision for liberation. Attendees can also enjoy live entertainment\, art\, a Black business expo\, food trucks\, a heritage walk\, and kids’ activities\, all while challenging stereotypes and building pride in the dynamic heritage of Black Americans and American culture. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 77th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship comes to Old Chatham Golf Club\, Mon\, Jul 13–Sat\, 18\, bringing one of golf’s oldest national titles to the Triangle for the first time.  \nMany Girls’ Junior champions\, including Mickey Wright\, JoAnne Gunderson Carner\, Hollis Stacy\, Nancy Lopez\, Amy Alcott\, Inbee Park\, Lexi Thompson\, Minjee Lee\, Ariya Jutanugarn\, and Rose Zhang\, earned this title as teenagers before going pro. The 2026 champion gains an exemption into the 2027 U.S. Women’s Open and an invitation to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur\, meaning this year’s winner could be competing on the LPGA Tour within a few seasons. \nOld Chatham has a Durham mailing address but sits in Chatham County on the northeast shore of Jordan Lake. The field of 156 plays two days of stroke play (July 13–14) before the cut to 64 for match play\, building to a 36-hole final on Saturday\, July 18. Old Chatham is a Rees Jones design that opened in 2001 and is set on 400 acres of protected pine woodlands.
