Then\, you will head outside to the Demonstration Garden at the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center to see how to plant garlic\, onions\, and leeks\, and to learn how to install row covers for managing pests. You will want to include these fun-to-grow crops in your cool-season garden! \nThis event is held indoors and is $12 per person. Participants will wander through vibrant fields to hand-pick their own seasonal flowers\, crafting a unique autumnal arrangement.  Instead of a traditional vase\, you’ll use a charming pumpkin cookie jar to showcase your floral masterpiece\, adding a cozy\, festive touch. This workshop is perfect for a girls’ afternoon out\, a special mother-daughter bonding experience\, or a fun date for couples. \nThis class takes place at the Jordan Lake Farms Pavilion. The cost is $80 per arrangement participant and $20 for participant guest/floral helpers. The workshop includes a pumpkin-shaped cookie jar that will come in handy for the fall season\, a bucket full of flowers\, fall decorations\, step-by-step instructions\, tools\, and a glass of wine. You’re welcome to bring outside food to enjoy\, but there will also be mini charcuterie boards for purchase with NC products such as cheeses\, salamis\, cheese straws\, cookies\, peanuts\, and much more. DESCRIPTION:In Cover Crops: Your Garden’s New Best Friend! on Thu\, Oct 23\, 9:30am-11am\, participants will learn from the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers of Chatham County about the many different legumes and grasses to use as cover crops\, what they can do for your soil and garden\, and how to include them in your garden planning. After the lecture\, you will head outside to the Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at the Chatham County Agricultural & Conference Center to see some cover crops and methods for planting and terminating. You will leave with some specific ideas about cover crops that can become your garden’s new best friend! \nCover crops are crops that are grown before or after the vegetable crop and not harvested as produce. Instead\, they are terminated by cutting or other methods and then left to decompose in the garden to help you build soil fertility\, improve soil structure\, reduce erosion\, suppress weeds\, and increase microbial activity and soil organic content. \nThis event is held indoors and is $12 per person. Free parking is available on the left side of the entrance to the Cooperative Extension office (red rocking chairs are located outside the entrance). Sorry – no pets allowed. DESCRIPTION:Join Matt Jones\, Extension Horticulture Agent and the NC State Extension Master Gardener Volunteer of Chatham County\, for Fundamentals of Composting\, a workshop on how to compost food and yard waste at home or in a community garden. Food scraps and yard trimmings together account for more than a quarter of household waste. Instead of trucking this waste to the landfill\, consider using composting – the controlled decomposition of organic materials into a soil-like substance – to turn it into a valuable soil amendment. \nParticipants will learn about the science behind the decomposition process\, understand the types of materials that are readily compostable\, and how to fine-tune the composting process by finding optimal temperature\, moisture\, aeration\, and pile dimensions. You will also learn how to troubleshoot common composting problems. Cooperative Extension will present research-based information from NC State Extension Specialist Rhonda Sherman and visit the on-site composting demonstration area. \nThe workshop occurs Thu\, Nov 6\, 9am-11:30am in the Cooperative Extension wing of the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center.
