Fri, Feb 3, 9:30am-12:30pm The State of Black Entrepreneurship in Rural North Carolina Report & Brunch
WEBB Squared (Wealth through Entrepreneurship for Black Businesses) will present a ground-breaking report on the status of Black entrepreneurs in Chatham County and other rural counties in North Carolina. In these communities, as in others across the country, the racial wealth gap is wide and visible, but little documentation has been compiled. The WEBB Squared report aggregates, for the first time, critical historical and cutting-edge data across a range of social and economic indicators to highlight the impact of centuries of policies and practices that have kept people of color from getting ahead.
Its purpose is to spark a vital and vibrant conversation about how local policies and processes can be enhanced to build the economic position of rural Black entrepreneurs. The report also will establish a baseline from which to measure progress and identify opportunities to stem the tide of wealth inequality so that as these entrepreneurs start, grow, sustain and scale businesses, they can create jobs, hire employees of color and improve household and community conditions.
Tue, Feb 14, 9:30am-12pm and Wed, Feb 15, 5:30pm-8pm Starting Vegetables From Seed Indoors
Growing your own vegetable transplants from seed can give you a head start on the growing season and access to varieties not commonly found as transplants at garden centers. Join Matt Jones, Extension Horticulture Agent, for a hands-on workshop on planting and establishing vegetables from seed. Participants will learn about seed biology, vegetable variety selection, growing media, containers, growing conditions, and diagnosing common problems. Following the lecture, participants get to practice planting seeds and transplants to take home.
