The American Tobacco Trail, a 22-mile long rail-trail now under development, traverses 4.5 miles through the extreme northeastern part of Chatham County. Currently, this trail in Chatham County is being cleared. About 3 miles of this natural surfaced (grass, clay and gravel) surfaced trail is now open for hikers, off-road and hybrid cyclists and limited equestrian use on a Use at Own Risk basis.
